Trying to confirm family "Folk Lore" concerning Charles Ernest Stuart Hill and wife Elizabeth (said to be a McKelvin born Motherwell 1875) The couple are said to have returned to Scotland in 1899 from South Africa where they were married about 1896. The couple are said to have re-emigrated to South Africa in 1909 with 3 children born in Scotland (Horace,Hazel and Charles).
The date of Charles Ernest's emigration is unknown but Elizabeth is thought to have departed in 1886.
So far I have found NO trace of the family either in the 1901 census, in birth records or in passenger listings.
I would be most greatful for any help and advice on how to proceed.
Many Thanks
NormanE

Re: The Stuart-Hill Family in Scotland 1899 to 1909
Hello Norman,
What years were the children born? On ScotlandsPeople there is a Surname: Hill, Forename: Horace stua
born in Edinburgh in 1900.
In the 1901 census for 4 Manor Villas, Weston, Somerset, England there is Elizabeth Hill, 26, born Scotland
Horace Hill, age 1, born Scotland
Charles is not with them. What year was Charles born and what was his occupation?
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Norman,
Here's a wee starter for you .....
Horace Edwin Ernest Stuart Hill was born on 4th February 1900 at 211 Morningside Road, Edinburgh. (District of Newington)
Parents: Ernest Charles Stuart Hill, Mine Amalgamate? and Elizabeth Hill (maiden surname McKelvin)
Their date and place of Marriage: 6th April 1897, Johanncolburg, Transvaal
The above info was obtained from: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
The search criteria was: "You searched for: Surname: "h*ll"; Surname Option: Wildcard; Forename: "horace"; Forename Option: Exact; Sex: "Male"; Year From: 1896; Year To: 1909"
If you've been looking for Stuart-Hill, this might explain why you haven't been able to find them - Horace is listed as HILL, not Stuart-Hill and also Charles appears to have been one of his father's middle names.
I've also sent you a Private Message regarding Horace's birth.
Anne

Ann and Sarah
Thank you very much for your help. I had a parallel burst of success when I found the siblings of Horace (Charles and Hazell) living at Weston (not Super- Mare) near Bath. All looking good now
Thanks again
