Hugh Gibsons Death
My great great grandfather was hugh gibson and he was married to mary hamil whom before was mcginty and before that mclellan, they were married in 1895 in blantyre and i am haveing trouble finding his death cert. he had a son called william in 1901 and he is still there in the 1911 census with his wife and children so it must of been after 1911 he died i dont no when his wife died or how many children they had. he is in blantyre in 1911 and his son was born in blantyre too in 1901 and on williams marriage cert he and mary are still alive in blantyre and he is a coal miner. mary might be down as hamil gibson mclelland or mcginty but on williams marriage cert she is down as previously mclelland. dont no when hey died my great uncle doesnt no either

Re: Hugh Gibsons Death
Hi Gary
You should have quite a lot of information there already. From the 1911 census you should be able to tell how many children they had by that stage and how many were living. It, together with the 1901 census should give you a year of birth for him as well.
The best idea would be to look for his wife's death first. There are various searches which you could do using her married and previous names in combination and none give too many results to look at. I have no credits so can't check the results. If you are lucky there should be a record showing most if not all of her surnames. That will then tell you whether Hugh was still alive at the date of his wife's death.
Once you have that you should have a better idea of the timeframe for Hugh's death but given the date of his marriage he may have survived past the cut off date at which you can download certificates. Could then be one for your next trip to the Mitchell.
Anne
PS If you search for a death of a Hugh Gibson born 3 years either side of 1874 you get a manageable number of results. 3 of these are in Lanarkshire but none in Blantyre.

And one of those 3 is the Hugh that you want. go for the registration district closest to Blantyre. His usual residence was in Blantyre, but he died in hospital.
His wife survived him for 23 years.

Re: Hugh Gibsons Death
Hi again Gary. MB has given you a very good steer on this search but basically you had enough information to find the death certificate yourself with a bit of concentration and not much expense.
Hugh's wife should have been fairly easy to find given the combination of names and the fact that she had not strayed from Blantyre. Probably achievable with one search and one certificate view. On my search there was only one Gibson with the other name M*Ginty.
At that point you would have had a start and finish date for Hugh's death, i.e. you know he was alive in 1911 and dead by the time his wife died. You know his birth year of around 1874 (I got that from the 1901 census and you will also have had the 1911 census and his marriage cert.) All you then have to do is search for Hugh Gibson deaths between 1911 and the wife's death. Even though there is none in Blantyre, a death in Lanarkshire is most likely. As MB says people die in hospital. Even on my search not knowing the finish date I only got 3 possible deaths in Lanarkshire and with a finish date you would have got two. You could not have had to view more than a couple of certs to get the right one......all for less than one lot of credits and very accessible from the information you already had.
It can take a lot of time and effort to find the correct death. I took months and vast numbers of credits to find my great grandfather John Kerr (the name is a blighter to tie down and the family was notably missing from the 1901 census giving me a problem in finding his dob). Hugh should not have been too difficult to track down but there is certainly no guarantee of instant answers!!
