Hi Cherel
Have you found him in any census (1851, maybe?)? That should give some indication of where he says he was born. Where have you found Stornoway mentioned?
There are several born Stornoway around 1818 on IGI. Have you looked at these?
What did your Donald call his first son?
Do you know when and where he died?
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search
Shows Ann MAC KENZIE Marriage to Donald Maclean:
13 APR 1846 Stornoway, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
There is only one birth DONALD MAC LEAN
Christening: 13 JUL 1818 Lochbroom, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
Father: JOHN MAC LEAN - but there are none for Stornoway.
Both records are submitted by members of the LDS Church and should be checked against SP.
There are more Donald Maclean hits that ARE for Stornoway, but none of them for 1818.

Re: ross and cromarty birth
Hi Cherel,
Have you tried to find his death certificate at ScotlandsPeople? His parents names should be given on that document, if the informant knew them. Between 1861-1871 here are only 15 deaths in all of Scotland for a Donald M*lean born 1818 +/- 5 years (only 10 for +/- 3 years)
2 are in Ross, but of course he needn't have died there, since he was a seaman. You could at least have a look at the list of 15 deaths and eliminate those which were recorded far inland or had birth years too far out. Maybe it would give you a manageable number to check.
All the best,
Sarah
