McLeods of Tain

Post by patjohn » Thu May 26, 2011 4:49 pm

I have managed to research back to William McLeod married to Catherine Mclennan 21/6/1877 in Ross & Cromarty and William's parents Hugh McLeod and Dolina Ross but I can't find Hugh and Dolina's marriage.
Family legend has it that the family were related to Torquil William McLeod 1897 - 1974 also Tain. I have found Torquil McLeod and his parents and paternal grandparents but I can't find the link between the two families. Would appreciate some help if anyone has any ideas
Thank you

hi Pat

Given the dates you have mentioned, I'm guessing the marriage you are searching for took place before 1855 - is that likely?
Given the area you are searching in, my guess would be that there is a high liklihood these folk were Free Kirk, and as such will not appear on the OPRs. According to the forms of which church did the 21/6/1877 marriage occur?

best wishes
Lesley

Yes it is likely it was before 1855. They had a son born about 1853. The 1877 marriage was Free Church in Lochbroom Ross and Cromarty. Is there any way of finding Free Church Marriages?
I have found Torquil McLeod and his brother John on the 1901 census - Torquil aged 3 but they seem to have disappeared as I can't find them on the 1911 Census. I know he was born and died in Tain but not sure if he went elsewhere
Thank you

So is this Torquil definitely related to you or is this the one you are trying to connect William with? What do you know about him?

If I have the correct William and Catherine I see them at Rosehall, Criech in 1881. Why do you think he was born at Tain?

On all census records Hugh and Dolina are living at Auchintoul, Criech, Rosehall, Sutherland and say they were born at Criech as were all the children.

Here they are in 1861

Hugh Mcleod 63
Dollina Mcleod 49
Donald Mcleod 16
Hugh Mcleod 12
David Mcleod 10
William Mcleod 7
Alexander Mcleod 3

It's a shame wee Alexander was born in 1856 otherwise his birth entry would show when his parents married although it might be worth a check just in case.

First son John was born about 1839 but that doesn't really help much.

Annette
