I have the Death/Burial OPR 685/01 0057 Edinburgh,( Greyfriars Kirkyard ??) for my ancestor John Collie which shows his age to be 65 in 1826, but no place of birth.
Back calculating gives an approximate date of birth of 1761. Searching SP turns up only one John Collie
born in 1761 (Rafford, Morayshire, Parents John Collie and Elizabeth Tulloh). However there are several other John Collie's born in close proximity to that date.
If the age at death for my John Collie is correct then I guess I have found him.
However if the age at death is incorrect, does anyone have any idea how to backtrack from the OPR document to find a place of birth ??
Thanks and Regards

Did he marry ?
If so there should be a recorded age on certificate.

Hi Maureen,
Thanks for your reply
I have copy of the OPR marriage certificate (685/001 0510 0215 Edinburgh). There is no age given
at the time of marriage (18 October 1781).

Hi Stuart
Any children he had may give clues to the names of his parents which may help focus your search. Also his occupation my be one he learnt from his father ...or it may not!! Some folk leave a reasonable trail behind them, especially those who maybe had a successful business or a bit of money, but others, sadly, leave nothing at all.
Best wishes
Lesley
There is no simple or quick answer to that one that I know of. It really depends on where your person was based geographically and what kind of paperwork they may have generated; legal documents such as wills, property documents, or any other type of mentions such as in a newspaper, trade directory etc) and of those, what has survived or is accessible to you. It will most probably involve a bit of digging about in archives and the like.does anyone have any idea how to backtrack from the OPR document to find a place of birth ??

Hi Lesley,
Thanks for your reply.
I thought that was going to be the case !
I may need to root around in College Kirk Parish, Edinburgh records.
