john macpherson from breakish isle of skye.....

Post by breakish » Sun Sep 04, 2005 3:27 pm

this is my first time in posting and i am stuck trying find my gg grandfather john macpherson who lived in breakish in skye in the parish of strath. he was born around 1815 and married marion robertson in 1850. his father was donald macpherson and his mother was catherine robertson, john is shown to live at 8 lower breakish during the 1891 and 1901 cencuses, and living at 11 lower breakish during the 1871 cencus, his age on death appears wrong as it says he was 64 years, when he wass probably at least 84 years old when he died on december 11th 1901, can anyone please help add the missing pieces to my jigsaw and identify when john was born and assist with finding dinald macpherson and catherine robertson his parents, slainte

The IGI on http://www.familysearch.org has :

JOHN MACPHERSON
Birth: 20 DEC 1815
Christening: 07 JAN 1816 Sleat, Inverness, Scotland
Father: ALEXANDER MACPHERSON Mother: CATH. ROBERTSON
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record.

but also a :

CATHARINE ROBERTSON
Marriages:
Spouse: DUNCAN MCPHERSON
Marriage: 30 MAR 1834 Kenmore, Perth, Scotland

Messages:
Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record .

Where did you get the information about his parentage?
remember that the information on a Death Certificate is only as good as the person giving it, it's easy to get names a little mixed up.

thanks for getting back to me so quick, i was aware of catherine robertson and alexander macpherson but the name donald came from johns death certificate, i take your point about the death certificate however johns son is also called donald (born on 16th feb 1851) and given the tradition of the oldest son being called after the fathers father i still think the link will end up at donald being the father, please feel free to get back to me if you disagree or find anymore out

thanks

To search Freecen, follow the link I posted above.

On the left hand side of the page there is a hyperlink "search the database" . You come straight to the search screen. I have no tips really except don't do too wide a search , or you will wait a long time to get an error message. Befor your start searching , you can check out the database coverage first - you will see that for Scotland, it is mainly only 1841 that's there - and that's not complete . But Strath is obviously there.
There are no images, just transcriptions ( you can volunteer via the site too ) . Bear in mind for 1841 , that relationships are not given, that the place of birth is not given , and that the ages for adults are usually rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5.

One more tip, if you do a death search on Scotlands People for Catharine Macpherson ( and use soundex or a wildcard to cover the Mc/Mac variations ) and Robertson as other surname, there is an 1861 death in Strath ...... if you haven't found it already

Cheers

Hello breakish,

The 5 year old is named Donald Robertson. Perhaps he is a relation.
There are quite a few Donald Robertsons born in Strath around that time.
