Hi,

My great grandmother was Elizabeth Brownridge born 1873 to James Brownridge and Elizabeth Mathieson - from Paisley, Scotland. Do you have Brownridges in your tree?

Hi Sarah and all at Talkingscot. Thank you for your welcome. Would be good to find more Brownridges from Paisley or Scotland in general or Lathams. I have a puzzle - a missing great uncle in my tree. My great grandmother that I mention above was married to William Cummings and they had a daughter Willimina Cummings. I have traced Willimina to Canada. Elizabeth later married my great grandfather Henry Latham and they had my grandmother in 1905. Between both marriages Elizabeth had a son Richard in 1900 but the father is not named on the birth certificate. Recently I was able to view someone elses family tree and she has Richard listed as Richard Latham. I have e-mail the owner of the tree and have had no reply, so I was wondering how it is possible to get more information on Richard. He was born in 1900 in Paisley but in the 1901 census Elizabeth is living alone. Any one got any ideas? :) ps - i'm new to all this but have gathered over 300 family members on Genes Reunited but short on detail.

Hi eegm,
Was Richard's surname at birth Brownridge or Cummings or something else? Have you found him in the 1911 census? If he took on the surname Latham, it sounds like he might have gone to live with his mother and her new husband. I don't see any likely candidates in 1901-- but he must have been somewhere! What was his birth date in 1900?

Regards,
Sarah

Hi

I do have Richard in my research, born to Elizabeth in 04 Jan 1900 at 9 Back Sneddon, Paisley. She was working as a waitress when he was born. I haven't looked into him to much but he definitely doesnt appear again in any records I have searched. I havent had a chance to search the 1911 census yet (very ill husband this year) but it would be worth it, there aren't any other Richard Brownridges in my files. I do however have more info on your Elizabeth and her family tree so would be interested in comparing notes and also seeing where all of her family ended up.

I do have Elizabeth and William Cummings having another child before Williamina, James Brownridge Cummings, 2 Jan 1893 20 Glen St, Paisley. Both dates I have given you are off the birth register which I have seen.

Would love to swap email addresses if this suits

Christine

Hi Christine

Since you mention a Williamina going to Canada - I have a 2nd cousin once removed who emigrated to Canada and married William Oliver BROWNRIDGE in 1913 in Ontario. They later moved to Saskatchewan. I am in regular touch with a descendant of theirs so if you think there might be a connection (although to my knowledge this Brownridge family were in Canada from mid 1800s) I could put you in touch.

Regards

Hi Lorna,

Thanks for your comment but I dont think your William Brownridge is a direct link to Williamina. Williamina's surname was Cumming and she married a Canadian service man named Robert Bowes, so the family name of the living relatives now (if any) will be Bowes. My grandmother was briefly reunited with Williamina (her half sister)in the 1970 when Williamina made an appeal in a local paper. It is possible that your William Oliver Brownridge does come from the same family a few generations earlier.

Hi eegm

Yes, that is what I thought - could be a connection from further back. Good luck with your searches.
