WILLIAM BUCHANAN

I have a marriage certificate for William Buchanan. Unable to find a birth certificate. I have been able to follow him on the Scotland Census from 1871 until 1901.

On the Census states he was born in Barrhead Refrewshire about 1844-1848. Parents James Buchanan and Catherine McIntyre. I am unable to find anything on William's parents. James Buchanan's occupation is a 'cloth lapper'

Is there a Barrhead Census?

Can you tell us where and when he married?
I take it that's where you got the parent information?

Barrhead is a funny one as far as Parishes go:
mainly in Neilston, but part is in Paisley or Abbey, but Eastwood parish is very close by.

I had a look at Freecen [ http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl ] for the 1841 & 51 census
several James or William candidates but not coupled with a Catherine.
There was, in 1841, a 20 year-old Catherine McIntyre living with her parents, in Grahamstom, Neilston.
A selection of unmarried James Buchanans crop up too.
Renfrewshire was a textile industry area, so his father's occupation would fit.

There is a submitted entry on the IGI for William, given as born in 1846 in Barrhead. It may be that there is no entry for him in the OPRs.

I know the only thing going for this guy is his name and year of birth (as his occupation and place of birth are wrong) but the name of the family he's living with is just too coincidental to ignore.

Will Buchanan 15 Boarder, born Glasgow, apprentice baker.

Probably nothing to do with anything but according to the Glasgow Herald, Thursday, April 24, 1862, on 16 March a house in Orr Street, Calton, occupied by Arthur Hunt, baker, was broken into and a gold watch and chain and ₤8 in copper money stolen. That would have weighed a bit.

I'm going to confuse things here by saying Orr Street could be pertinent (or again just coincidental) as in 1861 there was a George Elliot, shoemaker and family living there too.

Kay - what was William's address when he married and what was Mary Ann's?

Hi again everyone

William Buchanan's marriage certificate 1863 states he was living at Wells Street, Glasgow. I have found him on most of the censuses, I also have his DC1910.

William's wife Mary Anne Hunt/Hunter> was born in Belturbet about 1844 but her mother Margaret Duke? married Thomas Hunt in 1850 - she was 39 and Margaret's father is listed as James Elliot (a shoemaker)

I think I am expecting toooooo much from all of the kind people at TS .

My ancestors seemed to be a bit confused when it came to filling out details.

Most of my research problems go back the 'generation' before.
