Re: Anyone Researching These Names ?
Hi Del and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
I have only McGilvray in my various lines and they originated on the isle of Colonsay so no links there. Just a reminder to you that so far we have found about 27 different ways to spell Mc/Mac Gillivray/McGilvray/McGilvary/ McGillivery/McGilvra so don't get too hooked on a particular way of spelling the name - or any other Scottish name for that matter.
We love problem solving aka knocking down brick walls so if you are stuck with a family line, please post it. The combined brain power of several members can usually solve a problem.

Hi Russell, Thank you for the welcome, I do have one thing that is puzzling me, I have a marriage cert.for Arthur Paton & Catherine Docherty in 1877, that gives her mothers m.s as Shane, on her death cert. in 1937 her mothers m.s is given as Dorian [difficult to read but looks like Dorian], any ideas. Regards Del.

Hi Del
You have stumbled on a point which has sent hordes of folks off on a wild goose chase. Quite often the person registering a death might not know the surname of the dead persons parents. This was especially so when it was a son-in-law for example completing the paperwork. Generally marriage certificates can be trusted unless one of the newly weds is concealing something knowingly or unknowingly (e.g. an illegitimate child brought up by grandparents may give the grandparents surname instead of their birth name; or a child who has been informally adopted may take the name of their adoptive parents and give that instead of their birth name.
In my youth most sons-in law new their mother in law rather prosaically as "Mrs".
Registrars had to accept the information they were given.
I'd stick with the Marriage Certificate as the more accurate record.

McDowell with connections to Girvan in Ayrshire & to McHargs & Torrances. This is one of my brick walls.
Robina McDowell is my GGGreat-Grandmother who was born in Girvan c1Andrew McDowal as her father on her Marraige to David Ross in Greenock 1870.
.In the 1851 she is with her Mum Agnes McHarg(mcQueath) & her siblings whose surname is McHarg-they are older than her.

Hi there
It seems from the 1881 census that it is likely that Catherine was born around 1850 in Kirkmichael in Ayrshire, assuming I have the correct Arthur. Was he a railway surfaceman? There is no obvious candidate for Catherine in the Catholic Records that I can see.
Like Russell I'd say go for the marriage certificate details. Having said that I have found Dorians around that area at that time when looking for a friend. There must have been a Dorian connection in the family at some stage you would think.

Re: Anyone Researching These Names ?
Hello all,
In 1881 Catherine is 31 and born in Kirkmichael, as Anne said:
1881
Dalrymple, Ayrshire
Arthur Paton, 36, Head, born Ayr, Ayrshire, Railway Surfaceman
Catherine Paton, 31, Wife, born Kirkmichael, Ayrshire
Jessie Paton, 7, Daughter, born Dalrymple, Ayrshire, Scholar
James Paton, 2, Son, born Dalrymple, Ayrshire
Arthur Paton, 11 Mo, Son, born Dalrymple, Ayrshire
Jessie was clearly born before Arthur and Catherine's marriage. Her birth is on the IGI:
JESSIE PATON
Birth: 14 DEC 1873 Dalrymple, Ayr
Father: Arthur Paton
Mother: Jane Newbury
Arthur and Jane were married 2 Jul 1869 in Girvan, Ayr-- yet she is not with him in 1871
I am trying to do the logical thing and go backwards until I can find Catherine with her parents and then the parents before their marriage, etc.
The only likely looking cath* born Kirkmichael 1850 +/- 2 years that I can find in 1871 is a Catherine Dochaty who is a servant in Maybole.
In 1861 there is a Catherin Duffy age 12, born Kirkmichael. She is with her parents Patrick Duffy, 40, born Ireland and Elizabeth Duffy, 38, born Ireland and many siblings. Patrick's mother-in-law is also in the household and is transcribed as Margt Leone, 74, born Ireland.
In 1861 there is also a Catherine Docherty, age 12, born Nk, Scotland. She is a hawker in Kilmarnock, living at a lodging house at 26 Fore St. There is also a Michael Docherty, age 50, born Ireland, a hawker and Ellen Kearney, 45, born Ireland, hawker.
On the marriage certificate and death certificates, what forenames are given for her parents and what is her father's occupation? These details will help narrow down the field so we can perhaps find the mother's name.
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Anyone Researching These Names ?
Hello Everyone, and thanks all for the response, Right first things first, I have Susannah McDowell, born about 1876 in Ireland,in 1896 she married Samuel Clarke at Kilmegan Co. Down. In 1901 Susannah is at Ardrossan, Ayrshire, with her are her mother Anne McDowell, brother Joseph, and children Samuel A Clarke and Hugh Joseph Clarke, there is no mention of her husband Samuel. I think Susannah later married someone called Sanders, as on Hugh Joseph's marriage cert. In 1918 she is given as Susanna Sanders, previously Clarke, m.s. McDowell, his father Samuel is given as deceased, but I cannot find a death for him,any help appreciated, Regards Del.
Researching, Clarke, Calvert, McDowell, McCreadie, Paton and Scott families, Scotland and Ireland.
