Hello cathy52,
I started out trying to find John in 1901 in Ayr, in order to get the exact age, etc. for Sarah to help find them in 1911. Not so easy on Ancestry! If anyone else is trying this, note that they are indexed as "Reily":

1901
99 Cross st, Ayr, Ayrshire
John Reily, 50, Head, born Ireland, Shoe Croaker
Sarah Reily, 36, Wife born Ireland
Mary Reily, 3, Daur, born Ayr
Susan Reily, 1, Daur, born Ayr

There are already two children besides your grandfather, if I have the correct family. Finding them in 1911 should help you see how many children were in the family by then.

A search for William of the correct age and Sarah in the same household gets one hit in Troon, Ayr. There is also a John, but no Mary nor Susan. This John, however, is age 22 :? Just playing with the search, so I can't tell if it's the correct family.

Scratch that. Sarah Kelly, other surname Potts died in Ayr in 1909 :( So she won't be in the 1911 census with her children. That knowledge may help you narrow down the family in the 1911 search.

All the best,
Sarah

thank you sarah, it looks like the correct family except for the name reily. i think it could be a mistake in the spelling. i remember a mention about my grandfather staying in troon. his father must have moved to glasgow after his wife [ my gt grandmother] died. maybe that was why there were no more children,i'll have to try and find out what happened to my gt grandfather after his wife died. have you any suggestions. thanks sarah.

Hi all,

The 1911 census has a Mary Kelly 13 and Susan Kelly 10 boarding with Thomas and Margaret Chalmers in Girvan. Looks like the address is Fauldribbon? in Girvan Louette Parish.

Might be the girls.

Carol :D

Reily is more likely to be a transcription error. I have not seen the original census form-- have you? I suspect it says Kelly, but someone read it wrong when transcribing.

So, do you think your grandfather would have been in Troon in 1911? And what makes you say that John moved to Glasgow? There are so many Kellys that any little tidbit of information you have could be helpful in making an educated guess as to which William Kelly is yours. Otherwise, either you would need to spend a day at the Scotland's People Centre in Edinburgh or at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and go through all the possibilities until you find the correct one. It would certainly be cheaper than downloading all the William Kelly images in 1911!

Regards,
Sarah
