Hello Cathy,
I can’t say I know much about poor houses. My lot were usually too poor to be poor. I do know that they were a haven for old people who needed care but had no-one able to look after them at home. Poorhouse records, if they still exist, may provide clues as to why they were there.
There’s lots of useful information about poorhouses in this publication from Scottish Borders Council including the availability of records for Jedburgh. http://www.google.com.au/webhp?complete ... 80&bih=840
Here’s a picture of Jedburgh Poorhouse.

Have you been able to track her through her life using census information etc.
Hope that helps,
Alan

Re: isabella waugh.
Can't really add much to what Alan said but Isabella Scott/Waugh was living at the poorhouse in 1881 as a pauper.
I see she did have a few grown up children but maybe she was too ill for them to look after her especially when they had young children of their own.
Regards,
Annette

Hi Cathy
Borders Council Archives have a lot of surviving poor law records. They are very helpful and can be contacted at the heritage hub in Hawick. See this webpage.

If I were you I would drop them an email. They may be able to help.

Hi Cathy, I notice that your searching the name Scott /Waugh too, I also have Isabella Waugh married to John Scott 22/6/1832 Jedburgh and died 17/2/1880 poorhouse, Jedburgh.
We must be searching down the same family line.
My connections are Weir, Scott,Donnelly and Baird
