Post by LesleyB » Mon Nov 07, 2011 1:44 pm

In memory of:
  • Lieutenant James Percival (Percy) McNicol, 1897-1918, 4th Battalion, Argyll and Southern Highlanders, later 10th Battalion, died near Doullens, Somme

His cousin, Sapper Edwin Forbes Dick, 1896-1916, Royal Engineers Unit, 1st/1st Edinburgh Field Coy, died near Les Beoufs, Somme.

Private Henry (Harry) McAulay, 1886 – 1917, 10/11th Bn. Royal Scot. Fusiliers, latterly 10/11th Bn. Highland Light Infantry, killed in action in France, east of Arras.

Major Hugh John Duff, 1883 - 1918, DSO, MC, Cameron Highlanders, 10th (Lovat's Scouts) Bn. killed in action.

In Flanders Fields
Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872 - 1918)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In Memory of

Private John Lynn, 9718, 2nd Bn., Scots Guards who died on 16 May 1915

Remembered with honour and pride Le Touret Memorial France.

I can never forget the emotions when I visited his grave, or memorial - as there is no grave - at the beautiful cemetery in France. The CWG Commission really do a good job. I was the first person from my family to visit John and leave flowers. Although I never knew of him, I could not help the tears, for him and all the young men who rested in the many small cemeteries around Pas de Calais.
Researching names: McQuade; Lynn; McSporran; Sweeney; Madden; Smith; McIlvaine; Burns; Burgess; McFarlane; Deignan; Barr; McMurchie: Dumbarton/Glasgow/Campbeltown/Co Tyrone, Monaghan, Down, Derry and Donegal

While spending a few days in Bruges, last year, my husband and I took the opportunity to visit Ypres and the battlefields, cemeteries and memorials around the town.
My mother's three brothers served in and around the area in WW1 and all came through more or less unscathed. However, my father lost an uncle and a cousin and I was quite unprepared for the emotional impact of finding, the grave of one and the other's name on the Menin Gate.
On the day we visited Tyne Cot Cemetery we found a group of very young British soldiers also visiting as part of a tour of the WW1 battlefields in Belgium and France. They had all been given a small cross with a poppy which they were to place on the grave of their choice. Speaking to one of the young men I discovered he was a fellow Scot from Inverness. We were standing before a row of Australian graves and his answer to my suggestion that he was a long way from home will stay with me. ' Yes, I'm a long way from home, but not as far as these guys and I'm going home tomorrow, they never did' Wise and moving words from one young man who may well in the course of his chosen career be asked to make the same sacrifice as the young Australians of ninety-five years ago.
May I add my thanks to the CWGC for their wonderful work in keeping the cemeteries in their care in such beautiful condition. It must be some comfort to those who have lost loved ones to know that their last resting place is a place of serenity and peace.
