Michies in early 1800s

Post by patjohn » Sun Apr 22, 2012 2:40 pm

I have the marriage of John Michie in 1861 in Rothsey and his death in1887, both showing his parents as James Michie and Helen Hudson. I am searching for his birth. Calculating it on his age at time of Death 1887 it should be circa 1819 but calculating it on his age at his marriage it should be circa 1830. The 1871 census shows his place of birth as Stirling, St Ninians. There is a birth of a John Michie in Stirling but not to James and Helen. Can anyone help?

Thank you

Hi Patjohn

A few questions - what age does John give at marriage? 31? The "forms" of which church are stated? If not CoS it may be that he will not be listed on the OPR christening records. What is his father's occupation given as?

Where is he in 1851? In 1841?
Remember he gave the info himself at the time of marriage, but someone else gave the info at the time of his death.

There is this group in 1841 on the wonderful freecen site which may be of interest...but where is John? We'd expect him to be about 11 or so from the info you have given so far.

Place: St Ninians -Stirlingshire Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: St Ninians Ecclesiastical Parish
Address: Blackrow
MICHIE James M 55 Ag Labourer Outside Census County (1841)
MICHIE Helen F 45 Outside Census County (1841)
MICHIE Alexr M 17 Ag Labourer Stirlingshire

Best wishes
Lesley

Yes I have James, Helen and Alexander on 1841 census but no John. Yes marriage record gives age as 31. Will look up 1851 and 61 census to see if I can find anything else

Nothing to add except I wonder if he shaved a few years off his age when he married. I'm not finding anything on him before 1871 under Hudson or Michie (and variants).

The only other thing I can suggest is a look at Alexander's marriage entry (the one at St. Ninians in 1841)to see if his mother is Helen Hudson. Strike that he married before statutory records began. So maybe a look at his death entry in 1869 might help.

The occupations of James and John (when he married) may help too. What was John's address when he married Mary Black?

Regards,
Annette

I've just found a tree at Ancestry showing Alexander's parents as James Michie and Helen Hadstone. :D

A search at SP confirms a death in 1870 of a Helen Michie/Hudston (close enough for me!) at St Ninians.

Doesn't help with John's birth though but here is Helen's -

HELEN HADSTON

Birth:
04 OCT 1785
Christening:
09 OCT 1785 Carnock, Fife, Scotland

Parents:
Father: ROBERT HADSTON
Family
Mother: JEAN JOHNSTONE

Annette
