Photographer Query

Post by carolineasb » Wed Apr 25, 2012 10:41 am

I wasn't sure where to put this query, so apologies if I've got it wrong.

I'm looking to find out about a Photographer's business in Thornliebank, Glasgow, called "Tattersall". I've had a look at one of the websites that purports to include all photographers in the UK from the late 1800s on to about 1950 but they are not included. There are Tattersalls but not in Thornliebank. I'm really looking to find out when they were in business to try and age a photograph that I have more accurately (& possibly work out who the subject is!). All the photo has on it is "Tattersall" and "Thornliebank" printed in gold at the bottom. I think it has been taken somewhere between 1900-1910. If I was more computer literate, I would have uploaded it to the site, but unfortunately I am not.

Many thanks,

Caroline

Hi Caroline

I can see on Google a photograph of "Thornliebank Residents", published by Tattersall, and dated 1890.

This is a good site for dating photographs.... http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.ph ... 298.0.html

Thanks Hibee!

From reading just a couple of posts on the other site, I think my photo is older than 1900 - possibly 1870-1880. She is wearing an outfit that I would say was Victorian but I thought that was because she was an "older" lady.

Now spent some credits on SP looking for the Tattersalls in Thornliebank - not even my family!!

Found a James Tattersall with his family in the 1881 Census. At this stage, he was a Calico Print Engraver. In the 1891 Census, he was still an Engraver but was also a Photographer! So actually my photo must be later again than my second thoughts above but maybe the early part of the 1880s.

Incidentally, after some googling, I found a Richard Tattersall from Thornliebank moved to Canada and appears to have been a relatively famous Organist in music circles over there. I can't find an age for him yet but he looks like he maybe the son of James above. James had a son aged 2 on the 1881 Census born in Thornliebank and the Richard above is mentioned as being in Canada for over a year and being a native of Thornliebank in 1909.

Glasgow Herald, Tuesday, July 25, 1893
Advert inviting people with claims against the late James Tattersall, Engraver and Photographer, Thornliebank to send them in etc.

Another article in the same paper that there was a mention in Thornliebank Church of James Tattersall who lost his life in a boating accident at Eaglesham.
