ROBERTSON - Glasgow (all areas) Weavers/Cloth/Bookbinders..

Post by windywend » Thu Jun 21, 2012 12:46 pm

Hi everyone
I am a newby and I am researching my partners Scottish roots.

His ancestors are ROBERTSON from most areas of Glasgow. The first one for defo is John Robertson a Weaver c1791 married Mary Brown and had 12 children - John, Elizabeth, William, Christian, James, Alexander, Robert, Thomas, Mary, David, Charles "Brown" & Andrew.

I cannot find a Baptism for John R c1791 on marriage details 18 Jun 1819 it states a Weaver of Glasgow and Mary Brown is a Resident there, so nothing really to follow up on. But, someone else on Ancestry, believes his parents are John Robertson c1770 and Christian Smith c1775. Their marriage details 3 Jan 1790 he is a Weaver in Glasgow and she is Resident there, but without finding a baptism to link these together I cannot claim them as another generation, can anyone help with this one please ???

I have tried Scotlands People but I cannot find an entry for a mother Christian Smith and John Robertson with a son John c1791, I have considered that maybe she is not his natural mother and a possible subsequent wife to John Robertson c1770 ?? but again I am struggling, any help would be appreciated greatly.

I have also tried finding them on the 1841 census without much success as I have no idea where they were born/lived in Scotland, it could be "their son" John c1791 was not from Glasgow but went to live and work there.

Is there any info that would help regarding Weaving in Glasgow, was there any registers kept as Weaving/Spinning were controlled etc..???

Charles "Brown" Robertson left Glasgow after 1861 cen 4 Weaver St, Glasgow and by 1871 cen 25 Rutland St, Pancras, Middlesex and he remained in that area all his life at Bermondsey and Croydon marrying Margaret Beattie 1875 and had 2 children Charles John & Mary Theresa. Charles "Brown" appears to have added the name Brown on the 1871 cen and then afterwards, there is no notation of this on his baptism cert.
Charles John Robertson married 1899 St Olave, Margaret Ada Hennigan/Hennigan and had children Margaret Ada, Martin, Eileen Mary, Kathleen Cecilia, William Stanley & John George.
This family lived their lives in Bermondsey except for Martin who settled and married in York, Yorkshire, England marrying Ethel Tayles/Bean and having 2 children, still living, one of which is the father to my partner.

I have come across entries on familysearch.org (LDS) which all have the same Film No's which when I check it is for Register of BMD of Scotland by LDS, Utah, Family History Library - no actual church details is given. Does this mean that all the info on this film belongs/ed to a member of the LDS and same family of Robertson who have compiled info onto a family tree with the LDS ???
It is very possible that a member of the earlier Robertson's migrated overseas, I have "lost" 2 families from the children of John R c1791, nothing on UK census's and their children cannot be traced either, but then again, with the amount of wives deaths due to child birth etc in Glasgow and the men marrying again and more children, confusion reigns especially when cousins all born within a couple of years have the same forenames, oh this Scottish Naming System has a lot to answer too !!!

I do have membership to Ancestry but not worldwide and there is only 1 or 2 other members with the same family as new and not much info either, not to mention some is confusing too !!! If anyone could offer me help regarding doing some lookups for those I have missing, this would be most greatly appreciated.

If anyone is related back to any of these, please contact me. The extended families of the first generation lived their lives in most areas of Glasgow as Cloth workers or Book Binders etc., so far I have traced them to pre 1900 and is work in progress and slow too with all these names repeated.

Kind regards
Windywend

Greetings from New Zealand.

Welcome to TalkingScot

There are others with more info at their finger tips, re Glasgow records, than I, but if you are new to forum research, may I suggest that you have a play with the family names [inc spelling options] and locations, in the search box at the top of the page, plus other forums, like that of the Lanarkshire Family History Society, and of RootsChat, to see if any others are also searching the same people.

If you are lucky, you may find something on the two lines you know least about.

All the best.

Alan SHARP.

Hi Alan
Thanks for that helpful info, will have a "play" with things. I am new to Scottish Research, only used Ancestry and Scotlands People.

I have recd a reply from LDS Family Search regarding the Film No 6035516, here is the reply in full...

Quote...
Film 6035516 is a book that was filmed. It contains references to the
Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958. There is a FamilySearch collection by this namehttps://www.familysearch.org/search/...ection/1408347

Once you find a record in this collection, go to https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/...cal_Records%29 Scroll down towards the bottom the to the coverage tables. Find the type of record you are looking, birth, marriage, death. Then look for the year the end took place. Finally look in the GSs film # column to find the film which contains the actual birth, marriage, or death record. The film can then be ordered for viewing at the FamilySearch Center as you have done previously.

Info regarding the entries I have found in this Film No 6035516...so far, more searching now :D

I think the connection back to Ireland could be via the grandfather John Robertson a Weaver in Glasgow married Christian Smith 1790 in Glasgow. I cannot find a baptism for him, so maybe he came from Ireland ???

They had a son John Robertson 1790 bap Glasgow also a Weaver married Mary Brown 1819 Glasgow. They had 12 children.

Alexander Robertson son JR & MB was married in Ireland to Jane Short, all their 5 children were baptised in Ireland.
Mary Robertson dau of JR & MB married Peter Carrick in Ireland 1861, all their 9 children baptised in Ireland.
Andrew Robertson son of JR & MB married Jane Moffat, marriage not found (will search Ireland now) 2 of 7 children baptised Ireland, the other 5 no baptism's found for them, as yet.

All these are on the same Film No: 6035516, so this is very interesting.

BUT, all these families and spouses lived in Glasgow or areas of Glasgow, are on some/all Scottish census's, so they must have travelled to Ireland for marriage and baptism's, which has to be connected via the Robertson line.

Alexander R Clothlapper and wife Jane Short disappear off Scot Cen after 1861 cannot find them or their children ?? I wonder now if they settled in Ireland ??

Mary R Silk Winder and husband Peter Carrick Jobbing Smith remain on Scot Census's.

Andrew R a Bookbinder and wife Jane Moffat remain on Scot Census's.

If anyone can shed light upon why Scots folk travelled to Ireland for marriage/baptisms etc I would be most interested for any information.

Kind regards :)
