Glasgow Drowning 1920 / Burial

Post by REEBOKO » Sat Aug 04, 2012 11:45 pm

Hi
Wonder if anyone can help me find the final resting place Of John Fenton
John was born in Glasgow Oct 1895
Married to M J McEwan in Oct 1914
Drowned in the River Clyde result of a works accident in April 1920
He lived in Alma Street Govan at the time of his Death
He died when my Mother was only months old so not a lot is known
abt this side of my family
I would love to know where John was laid to rest so that one day I
may be able to visit his grave
Thanks 8)

Hello Reeboko, and Welcome to TalkingScot.

If there was a death notice in the local newspaper sometimes there is mention of a funeral and cemetery. The National Archives of Scotland record of the Fatal Accident Inquiry has the death date as 30 April 1920, whereas elsewhere I’ve seen the date given as 13 April.

If you have the exact date of death or the date of the FAI the Glasgow Herald is online here. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=G ... de=2&hl=en

All the best,
Alan

Chances are he will be buried at Craigton Cemetery. Although, as far as I am aware, it is privately run the records are held by Glasgow City Council. You can email them at les@glasgow.gov.uk I have been lucky in the past and they did not charge me.

Alan, according to this post he died on 30th April. http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx? ... ks.general

It's a shame The Evening Times has no online issues for that period as I'm sure that's where the family notice would be published.

Regards,
Annette

Thanks Annette, I didn’t spot that one. I’d been browsing the GH for a couple of days after each date and started to wonder. I tried the Scotsman as well for any reference to the accident but still no luck.

All the best,
Alan
