Douglas Hamilton brn abt 1790 Beith
Elusive death in OPR or anywhere else - Douglas Hamilton brn about 1790 Beith, died Johnstone/Kilbarchan/Elderslie/Inkerman after 1841 before 1851 Chelsea Pensioner/HLW/Pitheadman/Labourer his spouse Susan Hay brn abt 1800 Ireland. Can't find a doc to pinpoint death date or cause. Suggestions for angles to search appreciated. This Dougie (we have loads of Dougie Hamiltons in the tree) deployed in Waterloo Campaign so he a bit of a celeb in our beloved but bland family tree. I'd really like to find a death record.

Hi Morag
If Dougie died before 1851 there is a good chance there will be no death record, as statutory registration did not commence until 1855.
Unfortunately we all have a lang deid yin or two in our history that couldn't wait until 1855 to drop off the perch
On the odd chance he was noted on a parish register, you could always try that avenue of search, although all you may find is the cost of a mortcloth.

Hi there,
Did you mean he was born in Beath, Fife??
When did his wife die? How did you know it was before 1851?

Hi, it was late, i got lost in the genealogy maze - the correct place name is Beith (north ayrshire) - i don't know with absolute certainty he died before 1851, but he not on Census and his spouse recorded for first time as widow - I know he deceased before 25 april 1859 - his spouse Susan Hay brn about 1800 Ireland, died abt 1874 at Elderslie, is minuted as entering onto the Poor Registar (Abbey, Paisley) roll on that date - the Poor Registar record shows Douglas Hamilton as deceased.

Hello Morag,
Before searching for OPR deaths on SP it’s usually best to check if there were any recorded for a particular parish by referring to this. http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/re ... -oprs.html
Kilbarchan only has 1743-44.
Abbey seems to be okay, but that doesn’t mean perfect.
All the best,
Alan
