Finding death Notices

Post by MacThistle52 » Thu Nov 01, 2012 8:23 am

Can someone direct me where to find online death notices please. I am looking for 'recent' deaths for the years 1977 and 78 respectively and am presuming the deaths took place in Aberdeen. I know this is a broad area, but I have names and dates from the headstone which is in the Spital Churchyard, believe this has been merged with another cemetry but am unsure of its name. The note I have states that the main entrance is Pittadrie Place.
Appreciate any advice or suggestions. :?

The people I am looking for are the Grandchildren of my Gt Gt Grandparents and lived to the ripe old ages of 89 and 90. I am hoping that there could be relatives still living. Both are female and they are buried with their parents and grandparents, their is no mention of them having married. This is still something I am looking into.

Hi MacThistle,

See http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=pittodr ... l&t=h&z=17

It looks like the cemetery entrance is opposite the end of Pittodrie Place.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew, yes I know where the cemetry is thanks and have a photo of the headstone and inscription. I am wanting to find out how to perhaps get any death notice there may have been for the last two people who are buried there. They are sisters and going by their ages had a good long life. Am not sure if these ladies married at all as there is no mention of spouses of children for them.

Regards

Hello Brigitte,

To my knowledge the only Scottish newspapers online for the 1970s are the Glasgow Herald and the Evening Times. Sometimes notices for deaths in other areas appear in those but it would be relatively uncommon.

Glasgow Herald: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=G ... de=2&hl=en
Evening Times: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2 ... de=2&hl=en

You’ll probably have to contact Local Studies at Aberdeen Library and see if some kind soul there would copy the items for you. They should have copies of the Aberdeen newspapers in some form or other.

Scottish Death certificates can be applied for via ScotlandsPeople. You can search the statutory death indexes up to 2010 or thereabouts. Certificates after 1961 cost more than the earlier ones and can’t be viewed online but can be ordered.

Hope that helps,
Alan
