New Year greetings !
I want to locate the kin of my ancestor ALEXANDER BARRIE, born in Kirriemuir in 1831, son of John Barrie and Agnes Patterson.
He married Alexandrina Thomson and their first child was David Thomson Barrie.
They emigrated to England. He was an engineer, he moved South and worked first in Birkenhead and then in Birmingham.
I traced his history and was fascinated
He could not have been an only child, not in those days so I really hope to contact descendants of Alexander's siblings
best wishes

Re: alexander barrie
Happy New Year and welcome to Talking Scot Melissa.
Are you sure his father's name was John?
I can see an Alexander Barrie born to a William Barrie and Agnes Patterson in 1831 at Kirrriemuir. There is one other child indexed at the IGI to this couple - James born 1825. If I have the right one on census records he also died at Staffordshire in 1901.
Again if I have the right family this looks like them in 1841 from FREECEN at Kirriemuir.
Piece: SCT1841/299 Place: Kirriemuir -Angus Enumeration District: 26
Civil Parish: Kirriemuir Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 26 Page: 6
Address: Southmuir
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
BARRIE Wm M 60 Linnen H L W Angus
BARRIE Agnes F 40 Angus
BARRIE Alexr M 9 Angus
Since William was a bit older than Agnes maybe there is a chance he was married before and may have had other children.
Regards,
annette

Re: alexander barrie
hello Annette, Thank you for the post and and please excuse the long delay! I had computer (and operator) problems...
You are quite right, I wrote an error, Alexander's father was William Barrie m Agnes Patterson
Alexander was born 28.8.1831 in Kirriemuir. He and family lived in Wednesbury, Staffs.
And James his brother born 1825 - when I was a child there was a tale of a sea captain James Barrie - maybe this is he ??
How I started this., I saw an article in our regional daily about James Matthew Barrie ( b 1913 d 2000) who was nephew and namesake to the famous JMB. His photo had a total likeness to my brother, so I wrote, and when I met Jim Barrie at his home in Cornwall, it was like seeing a long gone uncle again. And in his family album was an even more striking female likeness. So I researched and found Alexander
Now some cousinship to JMB was claimed, and I am sure there is a close relationship somewhere, from the likenesses. JIm Barrie showed me his family tree, the first ancestor was William Barrie b 1760, the family trade was linen weaving and the names William and Alexander keep recurring.
It is fascinating that you suggest a second marriage. There was a linen weaver at Meikelmill named William Barrie (b 1785?) and he married Mary Thomson - not possible this is the same William? many thanks and best wishes Julie
