I have a nice painting with the above written on the back, and Isa: Crookshank signed in pencil on the front.
The question is who is Isa Crookshank?
There was an Isaac Cruikshank who spent time in that part of the world, and painted as did his sons, but I dont think this is the same person.
Ant ideas or pointers gratefully received!
Thanks
Pip Wilson

Hello Pip and ![TS welcome [TS_welcome]](./images/smilies/TS_welcome.png)
Do you have any idea of the age of the painting? What is the subject?
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
Sorry its been a while since I looked at this site.
I cant seem to attach an image to this but if you want to send me an email I will send you back a couple of images of the painting.
my email address is eggypip AT btinternet DOT com.
On the front lower right it is inscribed in pencil Isa. Crookshank, and on the rear in capitals ISA. CROOKHSANK TREQUAIR HOUSE
Any ideas?
If you can point me in any sort of a direction that would be good as I am stuck !!
Best wishes
Pip

Re: Isa:Crookshank Traquair
Hello Pip,
I can’t see anything in the picture that looks like Traquair House, unless it’s the view from there, or the artist lived there. http://www.google.com.au/search?q=%22tr ... 52&bih=751
It sort of looks like a 19th Century woman in the foreground.
There was an Isabella Agnes Crookshank born Montrose, Angus, in 1860. She appears to have died unmarried in 1933 in Edinburgh. Maybe she would be worth a look in some of the census years?
All the best,
Alan

Re: Isa:Crookshank Traquair
I live reasonably near to Traquair - the background to the scenery shows what is in effect a mountain range. There are no such mountains of that size and density in the Scottish Borders area near to Traquair. I'm pretty sure that the River Tweed does not meander as shown in the scene in that area either.

The bridge has a fair likeness to Gairnshiel Bridge in the Grampians.
See http://www.flickr.com/photos/mijoli/3890339493/
and http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/recor ... 1#carousel
or https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&s ... A90iPtHuzY
There is no sign of the building at the bridge parapet on these pictures, but it could be long gone.
Food for thought,
AndrewP
