Hi everyone,
I’ve been looking at the Cuthbertson family of Johnstone, Renfrewshire. On the 1851 census, there is someone I can’t identify. Full details are:
Civil parish: Paisley Abbey, Town: Johnstone, County: Renfrew, Address: Hogg House
ED: 13A, Page: 40, HS#: 124, Roll: CSSCT1851_126
William Cuthbertson, b1817 Johnstone, Cotton Carder
Christina Cuthbertson (nee Beaton), b1815 Port Glasgow, wife
Children Mary (13), John (10), Archd (8), William (2)
Rosanna Conner, b1830 Johnstone, Cotton Winder, niece
My question is who is Rosanna Conner and how is she related to William or Christina?
Searching the SP site I can’t find a Rosanna Conner born between 1829-31, but I can find:
Rose Connor, b7/12/1830, Paisley, St Mirin’s, parents Duncan Connor/Jane Fleury (CPR B/B)
Rose Ann Conner, b20/8/1830, Glasgow, St Andrews, parents Pat Conner/Ross A Dougherty (CPR B/B)
I’m guessing the 2nd Rose is the most likely, but how is she related to the Cuthbertsons?
Any ideas/comments would be welcomed.
Thanks
Alistair

Hi alastair
You might find that Rose Conner was Irish. As the Johnston industries developed, particularly the weaving side a lot of Irish folk moved across the irish sea. there was work for the menfolk too in the various foundries heavy labouring. We have a couple of lines where this happened. Sometimes a Patrick became Peter and place of birth was claimed to be Scottish to make them more acceptable.

Re: Rosanna Conner
Hi Alistair
Did William or Christina have any married sisters? Could she be the daughter of one of them?
I'd agree with Russell in that the lady's name does tend to suggest Ireland, but of course, it may be tht one of the sisters of William or Christina narrie dan Irishman and thus the surname and Irish looking firstname.
Are you looking at an a digital copy of an original census document or a transcription? the way you have typed it up, it looks liek a transcription you have been looking at - if so, best to check the original too just incase an error has been made with the name or the relationship.
Best wishes
Lesley

Re: Rosanna Conner
On 1851 FreeCEN she’s a niece but the address is Johnstone, Hagg Road Cottage. http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
CONNER Rosanna, Niece, U, F, 21, Cotton Winder, Renfrewshire - Johnstone
FreeCEN 1841 has a couple of possibilities in Paisley but the second isn’t born Renfrewshire. The first looks more likely but check FreeCEN for the full details.
Address: 14 Graham St, Johnstone
CONNOR Rose, F, 10, Cotton Factory, Renfrewshire
Parents appear to be Duncan and Jean.
Address: 95 New Sneddon St Mcfarlane Close
CONNER Rose, F, 10, , Outside Census County (1841)
Mother probably Rose.

Re: Rosanna Conner
Duncan's wife's surname was actually Hen(d)ry and they married in 1830 at Paisley - doesn't help much though.
Duncan Conner and the Cuthbertson family lived in the same street in 1841 - but again that doesn't really help.
I searched FREECEN in 1841 for a female born 1830ish with a name beginning with R and no surname, living at Abbey in case she was illegitimate. None of the surnames - Beaton, Hendry or Cuthbertson came up but it did show the daughter of Duncan and Jane.
Piece: SCT1841/559 Place: Abbey (Paisley) -Renfrewshire Enumeration District: 17
Civil Parish: Abbey (Paisley) Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 17 Page: 10
Address: 14 Graham St, Johnstone
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
CONNOR Duncan M 25 Ag Lab Ireland
CONNOR Jean F 30 England
CONNOR Rose F 10 Cotton Factory Renfrewshire
CONNOR Peter M 7 Renfrewshire
CONNOR Janet F 3 Renfrewshire
CONNOR Duncan M 2 Renfrewshire
CONNOR Patrick M 8 Renfrewshire

I think there is a strong chance that Rosanna married George McLetchie and died in 1886 at Hutchesontown. I also think there is a strong chance she applied for poor relief.
As usual it could be a while but I'll check next time I'm at The Mitchell.

Annette

Re: Rosanna Conner
Hi all,
Thanks for all the replies. To answer the questions:
Russell – I hadn’t considered Rosanna being Irish, as you mention, people telling fibs about their place of birth was not uncommon; like you, I have examples in my tree.
Lesley: The only siblings of William and Christina I’ve found so far are:
Janet Beaton (b1825), married John Cochrane (b1809)
Archibald Cuthbertson (b1822), married Jane McNaught (b1825).
There are probably more
I did look at a transcription on the Ancestry site
Alan – Thanks for the info; I think the second Rose at 95 New Sneddon St could be the second Rose on my list. Ross A Dougherty could be Rose Dougherty.
Annette – Thanks for the info.
FYI I’m still looking for clues as to the identity of my grandmother’s (Theresa Kelso) father (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16957 )
. John Cuthbertson (age 10 on the 1851 census above) would later marry Ann Kennedy. She was the cousin of William Angus Campbell who is my prime suspect at the moment. William was living with the Cuthbertsons in Glasgow in the 1870s while he was at school. Theresa’s grandmother was a Mary Connor and I’m wondering whether these Connors are related.
