Margaret Kirkwood Born abt 1830 Married Robert Hastie, Possibly in California no children found to them
Nicol/Nicholas Kirkwood born abt 1832 settles in California never married but adopts his nieces son.
Thomas Kirkwod born abt 1835 appears on the 1851 census with his brother William and family at New Dundyvan,Simpson's land, Lanarkshire also sister....
Agnes Kirkwood born abt 1837 married in 1861 to Roland Lewis in California
Andrew Kirkwood born ?? is named through Califorian conections but no nothing else about him.

Re: Kirkwood births
Hi Kerric
..and welcome to Talking Scot
The first step would be to try to find these people on the 1841 (most of them should still be iwth the mother and father if they are indeed a family group) and (more helpful) the 1851 census to see where they daid they were born. That would help you narrow down the area. It may be that there are not complete records for the parish of birth.
e.g.
Best wishes
Lesley

What place of birth is given for this census entry?Thomas Kirkwod born abt 1835 appears on the 1851 census with his brother William and family at New Dundyvan,Simpson's land, Lanarkshire

Re: Kirkwood births
Hello Kerri
This looks to be some of the family in 1841 - which you may have
No 8 Dandy Row Clyde Ironworks - Old Monkland Lanark
Mary McCrosskie 80 born outside of county
Margaret Kirkwood 13
Nicol Kirkwood 10
Thos Kirkwood 7
Agnes Kirkwood 5
The children all born in County
Was Mary likely to be a grandparent/ great grandparent? When did your family immigrate? Do you have the shipping/immigration records? Sometimes they give parents. Do they have more children than those on the 1851 census? Would be nice to think they followed the naming patterns but with 2nd daughter Jane - not too sure.
Trish
Edit: Hi Lesley - 1851 has William, Thomas, Agnes born in Old Monkland (I think - ancestry is very slowww at the minute - I looked earlier but didn't write it down)

Re: Kirkwood births
Greetings Kerric from New Zealand.
Man, how those old names keep repeating themselves. I had to take a second look at your post, and dig out some old papers sent to me from Scotland. I was sure there were Kirklands & Kirkwoods some where there, and Marshal/l is another closer name.
In this case, of a very distant branch, a Mary KIRKWOOD married a Mathew CAMPBELL (1836 - 1915) of Carmunnock and had daughters named Christina, Mary and Jessy, and not that far away from your named Lanarkshire Parishes.
All the best for your research.
Alan SHARP.

Re: Kirkwood births
Hello All,
Thankyou for your welcome and replies.
Trish, I found on the 1841 census William Kirkwood 19yrs Apprentice Plasterer with William Kirkwood 75yrs pensioner,Isabella Kirkwood 75yrs all born in the county.Old Row Cylde Ironworks Rd. I have kept the record of the others with Mary McCrosskie in 1841 don't know if she is related or not. If this is the children that would make Isabella and Andrew older and living elsewhere.
I did find this marriage proclamation in 1819 Old Monkland William Kirkwood and Jean /Jane Marshall of the Parish and have held onto this as William Kirkwood and Jean Marshall name their 3rd daughter Mary Buchanan Kirkwood.First daughter Elizabeth Gordon Kirkwood,2, Jean /Jane Marshall kirkwood.A son, William must have died in infancy as they name a son born in Australia William Alexander Kirkwood in 1857.
Lesley, you may be right about the missing records , Thanks again,Kerri

Re: Kirkwood births
Hello Kerri
Took me awhile to find the 1841 you mentioned - I found William on FreeCen as Wm Kirkwood - apprentice slater - which fits with 1851 job. It would seem that 75 year old William and Isobel may have been his grandparents. Looking through the census records on FreeCen - the two groups are both in the same area 10 pages apart on the census - so It seems likely (sadly for them and the research) that the parents had died before 1841. I doubt there were any surviving children younger than agnes - I can't find any other children in the area that would fit into the family.
This seems the most likely for Isabella (remember that ages were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 in 1841)
Piece: SCT1841/652 Place: Old Monkland -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 24A
Civil Parish: Old Monkland Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: - Folio: 25 Page: 12 Address: Langlone
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
FINLAY George M 38 Joiner Outside Census County (1841)
WHITLAW Mary F 36 Miliner Outside Census County (1841)
FINLAY George M 9 Lanarkshire
FINLAY James M 20 House Carpenter Outside Census County (1841)
KIRKWOOD Isabella F 15 Domestic Servant Lanarkshire
Could probably look to see if Robert Weir was living nearby - if you have his details.
Family search has 2 marriages in Lanarkshire between a William Kirkwood and Isobel - both have children baptised - both have a son William - although the one born of William and Isobel Bunten seems a better fit agewise to someone having children from 1820 onwards. This family is from Barony - my geography of Lanark is not good - but Barony was a Glasgow parish (I think)
Given that William used the Middle name Buchanan - there is a marriage on LDS site that looks a good fit
William Kirkwood Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910 marriage: 07 Nov 1819, Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland spouse:Mary Buchanan
I cannot find any baptisms for children of this couple - so not sure where to look next - burials? wills?
Trish

Re: Kirkwood births
Thanks Trish ,
I am sorry to have posted the wrong marriage in my reply . I have that marriage record of William Kirkwood & Mary Buchanan and that's what I meant to post !!!! I have had a frustrating time of typed work disappearing and obviously didn't read through properly. I have tried the Wills section on Scotlands People but no William Kirkwood 's there.
You asked about Robert Weir, from the 1851 census it says he was born in Barony ,Lanarkshire Occupation Fire brick Engine Keeper.
This entry for the 1841 census at Barony ,Bridgeton, Lanark, has A Robert Weir 20 yrs cotton hand loom weaver living family, parents William Weir & mother Margaret (both born in Ireland) and siblings.??
Interestingly his children with Isabella Kirkwood don't appear on Scotlands people either.
Kerri
