Hi Clancam,

From the information you gave above, you can make an assumption that daughter Elizabeth was born in 1878-1879. So, if you search on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you can find her birth record quite easily by narrowing the search down to Perthshire. That will produce a small number of results, of which only one is in Logierait. Look at the birth certificate and that gives the parents names, including the mother's maiden surname. It also gives a date and place of the parents' marriage.

The online IGI gives the following list of children to Peter and Helen.
  • Ann Campbell - birth: 4 September 1863 LOGIERAIT,PERTH,SCOTLAND
    John Campbell - birth: 7 October 1865 LOGIERAIT,PERTH,SCOTLAND
    Peter Campbell - birth: 14 October 1867 LOGIERAIT,PERTH,SCOTLAND
    Margaret Campbell - birth: 16 January 1870 LOGIERAIT,PERTH,SCOTLAND
    James Campbell - birth: 24 December 1870 LOGIERAIT,PERTH,SCOTLAND
    Thomas Campbell - birth: 6 June 1873 LOGIERAIT,PERTH,SCOTLAND
The online IGI birth index for Scotland finishes at 1874, so you need to look at the 1881 census to find two children born between 1874 and 1881. It is possible that there were others born that did not survive until 1881. Only the youngest two on the 1881 census were at home for the 1891 census. Unfortunately Helen was widowed by the 1911 census, so does not say how many children were born to her marriage. So you don't know for sure that you have found all the children born to her. One way to have a go at that could be expensive, is to look at all the Campbell births in Logierait from 1875 to somewhere in the 1890s (whenever you judge that she was likely to be beyond child-bearing age - there were 25 Campbell births registered in Logierait from 1875 to 1899).

So, again on ScotlandsPeople, you can find the parents' marriage certificate - it is only one in Scotland for that year with that pair of names, and the location won't surprise you. So from that you get their parents' names.

A parent search on the online IGI gives 10 children born to Peter's parents in Logierait (including one pair of twins).

A parent search on the online IGI shows 4 sons to Helen's parents, but no daughters. Do the same search on ScotlandsPeople and you will find 4 sons and 3 daughters (including Helen).

Assuming the parents of Peter and Helen survived until at least 1855, you could find their death certificates to get the names of their parents (including maiden surnames) and get back another generation in the same manner as above.

All the best,

AndrewP
