When did John Campbell Taylor leave Scotland

Post by vantaykay » Fri Jan 10, 2014 9:33 am

I found John Campbell Taylor in the 1901 Scotland census then lost him and then found him in South Africa, but do not know when he arrived in South Africa?
John Campbell was born on the 3 June 1874 in Saltcoats to Duncan Taylor and Marion Campbell. John married Mary Stevely and in 1901 they were living at 1 Union Street Saltcoats.
Now sometime between 1901 and 1918 they must of come to South Africa. Because in 1918 their oldies son join the South African army to go and fight in WWI.
John Campbell was a dynamite worker. Can anyone help me by finding out when he left UK. Thanks.

Hello vantaykay, I had a look on Ancestry for you, but they don't seem to have any passenger records for South Africa specifically.

However, there is a John Campbell Taylor arriving at Glasgow from New York 5th Dec 1923, but his birth date is given as 1878 and he is a florist - a bit of a stretch from an explosives guy  His address is given as Rose Cottage, Inverurie.

There's also a John Taylor arriving the next year with the correct birth year, same ports of departure and arrival, described as an engineer. Address is Bank Building, Busby.

I'm not sure whether these New York ships docked in South Africa on their way to and fro Glasgow or where you'd find the South African passenger lists (on FMP?)

Keep at it, very best of luck,

Thanks Billiegirl for info. I will keep on looking and maybe try my 86 year old aunt again if she can remember when her grandfather came to South Africa.
