Where the heck did the Lindleys arrive In the Americas .....

Post by joette » Mon Sep 19, 2005 3:35 pm

I know they lived in Phippen Sask as Homesteaders( seen their grant of land).Ive searched the Ellis Island site to see if they sneaked in that way but no success. They are Catherine LINDLEY NEE SCOTT & her Husband HUGH both BORN& married Penicuik MIDLOTHIAN 1898. They were in Phippen in 1928- we have pictures & letters. What happened after that is a mystery. My Granny told me(the local Oracle) that two Canadian cousins visited during WW2 when on active service in Scotland - that would be to JOHN SCOTT(known as Jock & Catherines Brother) They would probably be Catherine &Hughs Grandsons so may not even be Lindleys as they had daughter/s ?as(CHRISTINA YOUNG LINDLEY born Penicuik 1902.) as well as son/s? John born 1898.
Ive searched online Census for them. Anybody help where I can search for Death /Birth as I dont know if any children were born Canada.

We can chop a couple of years off your search (if they arrived directly in Canada rather than via the USA). This site:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivi ... 802_e.html
is a searchable database of Canadian immigration records from 1925 to 1935. Your Catherine and Hugh do not appear. Most of the Lindleys -- 23 of the 27 entries -- claim English nationality; the other four claim US nationality.
Sorry, not much help... but other (not on-line) records might be searched.
See
http://www.genealogy.gc.ca/10/1008_e.html for some details.

:D Well I think I may have had some success on this via the Lothians Family History Forum. Somebody in Canada who is the Great-Niece of my Great -Aunt(she is husbands relative).
It looks like the Lindleys/Veitch(coincidentally we share the name.) arrived in Canada 1907 via North Dakota. Still cant find them on any arrival sites - tried Ellis Island but no joy.
I think North Dakota was a Mining area and they were Miners but I guess they thought that homesteading would be more convivial???? Ive heard it was a very hard road to plough-no pun intended :D
