Jean Coulter

Post by babbie » Tue May 06, 2014 9:47 pm

Jean Coulter was born c 1800 in Ballantrae Ayrshire daughter of Alexander Coulter and Grace Wilson she married John Abernethy in 1830 at Ballantrae.

I have been unable to find her in 1841 census
on 1851 census she is living with her mother Grace a widow and her brother John who is unmarried and a fisherman

I find her next with her brother John on 1871 census --- she is a visitor .

John died in 1874 she did not register his birth

Where was Jean on other census , Grateful for any other information and help.
Thank you

Hi babbie,

Looks like she was housekeeper to her brother John in 1861, listed as Jane (age 54) rather than Jean.

I haven't seen any sign of her in 1841. However as the level of detail is less, and rounding down of ages in the 1841 census, proving a person is the one found can be more difficult than in other censuses.

All the best,

AndrewP

I think this is the most likely Jean(Jane) in 1841 from FREECEN. Her marriage was registered at both Ballantrae and Stranraer.

Piece: SCT1841/899 Place: Stranraer -Wigtownshire Enumeration District: 6
Civil Parish: Stranraer Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 9 Page: 5
Address: Greenvale St

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks

ABERNETHY Jane F 35 Independent Outside Census County (1841)
ABERNETHY Sarah F 25 Independent Wigtownshire
LAWRIE Alexr M 50 Merchant Seaman Ireland
MARTIN Janet F 15 Female Servant Wigtownshire

Thank you both so much for your help.
I am trying to prove that my gggg grandfather was married twice 1st to a Margaret McTaggart then to Grace Wilson.

I suspect Jean/Jane was to Margaret .

Hoping to go GROS in Edinburgh for the first time soon I am trying to get as much information as I can put together.

Alexander Coulter according to the 1841 census was aged 85 and born in Ballantrae Grace was much younger and born in Ireland so won't get back any further with her.
I have pinpointed Alexander's death to between 1841-1851 and Grace to 1851 -1855 .

Have you tried the route of gravestones?

If Grace & Alexander died before 1855 you'll not find much info about their death,
but sometimes a cemetery can give more.

Who is the mother noted on Jean's marriage and death ? death info is only as good as the person providing it,
but if she knew her birth mother she may have said when she wed.

I had a look at the IGI on Familysearch there's a:
Jean Coulter born to Alex Coulter and Grizel [ Grace] Wilson in 1802
or
a Janet Coulter with a Mother Margaret McTaggart born 1795

both extracted entries from Ballantrae.

What makes you think Janet is your Jean/Jane? and who is Grizel's Jean then?

Hi,
Janet was the daughter as you say of Alex and Margaret McTaggart married James Cunningham no marriage found on 1841 census she is a widow died c 1877( sorry don't have access to my notes at moment ) it was her daughter Margaret who registered her death . She and James had 4 of a family Alexander Coulter --- Margaret McTaggart -- Robert Cunningham and Grace Wilson all born Ballantrae .

Jane/Jean I have as yet not found a death for her it is a very brief marriage in OPR no mention of mother she in with Grace on 1851 census in Ballantrae they are both widows .

I have walked Ballantrae cemetery while on holiday in the area but have never been able to find any headstones for them.
