WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO WILLIAM WADDELL?.....

Post by joette » Wed Sep 21, 2005 10:17 am

My maternal Great-Grandfather was orphaned at the age of twelve when his Father died in 1867.(ALEXANDER WADDELL).My GGrandfather then enlisted as a boy soldier- they lived Dollar Clackm. .By 1881 he is living with his sister Jean & is a Stonemason as is Jeans husband.
William his younger brother was only 7/8 & I think ive found him living with an aunt in 1881 as a Stonemason also. He was a witness in 1883 when my GGRandparents married. He then went to USA(NEW YORK) where he died in the late nineteen thirties/forties as a Bachelor.
I dont think that he lived with his sister on his Fathers Death & as a neighbour reported the Death are presuming there were no other Adult relatives around. My question is what would have likely happened to him?
Were there any Workhouses/Orphanges around in 1867 in Dollar? They were Presb.& would any working siblings be expected/compelled to provide financial aid?. Despite the early death of parents & the scattering of family they remained in contact with each other & my GGrandfather spoke fondly I am told of his siblings(off course I cannot find any Birth info on them!!!) My GGrandfather made sure that his large family of boys/girls were educated & given Apprenticeships - he was particularly keen for his girls being able to provide for themselves in case of becoming widows. When my Grandfathers sister was widowed my G-Uncles/Grandfather provided an allowance for her which was a hardship for him as he had six children to finance. This Family Fialty must have came from somewhere :)

No I have been unable to trace him in USA.
I have however found all the other siblings & what a sad story to tell.
We start off with the 1841 Census where we have Isabella B Graeme living in Auchterder with her daughters Jane 20,Ann 1&,Jane1 ,Christine Campbell her grandaughters.
1851 Census we have Ann living Auchterarder with Jane-10 Daughter(she claims on her Marriage that her Mother is in fact Jane Graham.)
James Cooper-6 &Thomas Waddell-2.
1861 Census-Dollar Clackmannan-Alexander Waddell-45-Wid.(Ann died just weeks before the Census.)
James WADDELL-16-app Mason
Thomas Waddell-11-Scholar-he becomes a Tailor before dying in Edinburgh of TB-single with his brother Alexander reporting the Death.William& John(my GGrandfather were living nearby & John an app.tailor which he obviously didn't fancy as he became a Stonemason)
Alexander Waddell-9
Margaret Waddell-7-she marries later on in her thirties to A widower with children. He is also from Dollar & is a stonemason. She is living near my Ggrandparents when she dies childless.
John Waddell-5
William-3.
1881 Census we have William living in Coatbridge with a James Cooper & family. Now we always thought that one of my GGrandpa's sister had married a James Cooper but no turns out that in fact James Cooper is in fact their half-brother-mother Ann Graham Father James Cooper.
He dies in Coatbridge when the jib of a crane falls on him fracturing his skull. He leaves children.
1881 Census John Waddell is living in New Kilpatrick as a Boarder with Jeannie Gibson & her family. This "Jeannie" is Jane Graham who is claiming her parents as Jane Graham & William Sommerville. As Jane is not around for the 1851 Census I am presuming she died & that Ann took"young Jane" in & raised her. There is no other Jane around after that although I suppose she could have died pre 1855.
Both John & Margaret were living with the Gibsons when they married.
Alexander dies between the wheels of the train where he is the Goods Guard near Stow.He is also single & childless.
So the only Waddells from this line having any offspring(that I can find!) is my GGrandfather.
William I can find no trace of him arriving in USA-we know he went & when he died his estate was advertised but the family thought that it would be too expensive a buisness to claim it & with so many of them-my GGrandparents had nine children plus the offspring of James Cooper that it would be a futile claim that they could not afford to make.
So I am presuming he died in the thirties as my Mother remembers the discussion.

Don't suppose your family is any relation to Willie Waddell, played for Rangers way back when. Maybe the fifties

Not that I know off although my Grandpa used to say he was his cousin!
Still you never know!!!
No in order to be related he would have had to have been the son/grandson of my Grandpa's brother & I know each one of them.
