Hi,

I am trying to find the marriage of John Lightbody born about 1826 probably in Larkhall and Marion Nic(h)ol born 30th May 1825 in Larkhall in the parish of Dalserf. I have found record of their daughter Janet born 29th Sept 1857, Drygate, Larkhall and the family in 1861 at 15 Church St, Larkhall with Janet and 3 other older children. I also have the deaths of both John (1901) and Marion (1910) in Larkhall.
Any help much appreciated.

Hello Lizzie,

There doesn't appear to be any Dalserf OPR marriage records 1845-1854. Perhaps that's why you can't find the marriage?

Hi Alan,

That would explain it! Dalserf Parish Church records are so well documented I thought it strange I couldn't find a marriage. It looks like the proclamation records could be in the Kirk Session Records in the National Archives so I'll have to wait til I have a chance to visit Edinburgh.

Their son Robert was born in 1855 so if you look at that birth entry it will give you the date and place of marriage although as Alan discovered you probably won't find an actual document.

Hi Annette,
Thanks for that idea. I had thought birth records showed the marriage of the parents which is why I have the birth record for their daughter Janet who was born 1857. I just chose her randomly! Unfortunately it doesn't show the parents marriage date. Is this perhaps a detail that came in at a later date?

Hi Lizzie,

The marriage details are shown on birth certificates of 1855, and 1861 onwards. It is not on 1856 to 1860 birth certificates.

Thanks for that info, must try to remember that.
I have now been able to find the year and place of their marriage and that they had 3 children before Robert.
