Isabella Carruthers

Post by BobAdams » Mon Dec 29, 2014 6:46 pm

My grandmother was Isabella Carruthers. She was born in 1881 in Scotland. She immigrated to Canada, probably came through Hailfax Nova Scotia and then moved to Montreal. She married George Adams and had two sons. My dad was the oldest son and died in 1999. I plan on visiting Scotland in 2015 and would like more information about my grandmothers family. Thank you. Hello and welcome to Talking Scot Robert. :D

What do you know already and what are you looking for?

You should be able to go back a couple of generations at least by registering with http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk where you can download BMD entries for a small fee.

Here is Isabella and family in 1881 at Windyhills, Closeburn-

James Carruthers 42 born Minnygaff, Kirkcudbright, Shepherd
Jannet Carruthers 43
Samuel Carruthers 15
Robert Carruthers 13
Jane Carruthers 11
Georgeina Carruthers 8
James Carruthers 6
Jannet Carruthers 4
Agness Carruthers 2
Isabella Carruthers 2 Months born Closeburn, Dumfriesshire

It looks like James and Jannet are in Ireland with Agnes in 1901. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001005469/

If you don't already have it you can download (Albert) George and Isabella's marriage details here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N4DS-Z29

Annette

I believe my great grandfather(?) was a shepard. My grandmother sisters were educated and raised in Dumfries. A sister (?) married into the McBride family from northern Ireland and later immigrated to the US. So this information may be on the right track... Thanks.

Hi Bob
Slightly off topic but if you have traced back to Minigaff you must visit the area when you come over. ^the landscape is bleak and windswept. Shepherd's children often had to walk miles everyday to school along hillside tracks and school could be a one roomed building in the middle of nowhere. Fabulous countryside. Lonely life for children.

Hi Russell,
Definitely will visit the area.

My wife and I owned a small farm/Bed and Breakfast in Pennsylvania and raised sheep. We lived in rolling hills near the Brandywine River valley. My son and I have hunted pheasants and deer in Pa and now in the State of Washington.

We moved to Whidbey Island in June this year, a farming and fishing island in the State of Washington which is called the Emerald State with the tall snow capped mountains and the Pacific ocean.

This year I managed to shoot 2 deer, 15 pheasants and then caught Coho salmon off the beach. We have access to quality clamming, oysters, and mussels when the tides are low. Crabs are a big draw as are the whales.
Thanks.

Bob

Hello Bob,
Sounds like you followed right in the footsteps of your great grandfather! I was born a few miles from the Brandywine River Valley and now also live in the Pacific Northwest. Small world.

[cheers]
