Hi Helen,

I guess you have some (or all?) of the following information:

1881 census
  • Dwelling: Mansfield Village
Census Place: New Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203606 GRO Ref Volume 608 EnumDist 2 Page 23
    Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Richard IRVING M 60 M Dunscore, Dumfries, Scotland
    Rel: Head
    Occ: Ag Lab
Elizabeth IRVING M 53 F Kirkconnel, Dumfries, Scotland
    Rel: Wife
Alexander IRVING U 21 M New Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland
    Rel: Son
    Occ: Coal Miner
James IRVING U 16 M New Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland
    Rel: Son
    Occ: Coal Miner
From the online IGI - children of Richard Irving and Elizabeth Hastings:
  • AGNES IRVING - Birth: 07 JUL 1850 New Cumnock, Ayr
CHARLES IRVING - Birth: 15 FEB 1855 New Cumnock, Ayr
JANET BELL IRVING - Birth: 18 FEB 1857 New Cumnock, Ayr
ALEXANDER IRVING - Birth: 01 MAY 1859 New Cumnock, Ayr
ANDREW IRVING - Birth: 26 DEC 1860 New Cumnock, Ayr
JAMES IRVING - Birth: 17 NOV 1863 New Cumnock, Ayr
GEORGE IRVING - Birth: 10 SEP 1867 New Cumnock, Ayr
RICHARD IRVING - Birth: 10 SEP 1867 New Cumnock, Ayr
From ScotlandsPeople - probable deaths of Richard and Elizabeth.
  • Richard Irving, 1890, age 69, New Cumnock, Ayrshire
Elizabeth Irving / Hastings, 1902, age 74, New Cumnock, Ayrshire
From the online IGI - children of Charles Hastings and Agnes Kay:
  • ELIZABETH HASTINGS - Birth: 16 NOV 1826 Kirkconnel By Sanquhar, Dumfries
ISABELLA HASTINGS - Birth: 31 JUL 1828 Kirkconnel By Sanquhar, Dumfries
AGNESS HASTINGS - Christening: 13 DEC 1835 Kirkconnel By Sanquhar, Dumfries
SUSAN WILSON HASTINGS - Christening: 19 DEC 1841 Kelton, Kirkcudbright
SUSAN WILSON HASTINGS - Birth: 07 DEC 1842 Kelton, Kirkcudbright
It is most probable that Susan Wilson Hastings of 1841 died in her first year and the name was re-used for the next daughter.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Helen,

In addition to the above list, I noticed that the Irving twins of 1867 were not at home for the 1881 census. It looks like they both died young. Richard in 1867 and George in 1868.

All of the 1855 onwards certificates should be available for you to download for a fee from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk . One certificate that should stand out from the crowd is the 1855 birth of Charles Irving. 1855 certificates have a level of detail that was never done again. Importantly, it should show how many children had already been born to these parents, and whether they were still living at that date in 1855. As many pre-1855 births were not recorded, you should be able to find if Agnes was the only child already born to this couple, or if there were any more.

All going well, Richard Irvng's 1890 death certificate that I listed above should give you his parents' names and therefore get you back another generation on that line.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

1890, not 1902 as I previously said.

Dear Andrew,
The Charles Irving born 1855 was my G grandfather and there are a few Irving twins around. I am so excited and will look into Scotlandspeople at the weekend for those certificates, Thanks again Helen

A Thomas Irving b~1852

Post by Jack » Mon Sep 26, 2005 3:47 pm

Hi Helen and Andrew,

The 1861 New Cumnock census (in addition to the children you know of) also has a Thomas IRVING (9yrs).
The 1871 census should be useful to see who was all still living at home.
This may be Thomas in 1881.

ps, Andrew any chance that the christening for Susan Wilson Hastings on 19 Dec 1841 is an Lds transcription error, and meant to be 1842?
Or vice versa; the 7 Dec 1842 birth shd've been 1841?

Irving - 1841 census

Post by Jack » Tue Sep 27, 2005 10:19 am

Hi Helen,

The 1890 DC of Richard that Andrew found will hopefully have the same named parents as
the IRVING family to be found at OLD Cumnock in the 1841 census.

http://home.chilitech.net/~mmjeffery/myweb9/index.htm

Can't see Elizabeth HASTINGS' family, but not all of 1841 has been transcribed yet.
Her parents Charles, Agnes & family appear to be in New Cumnock in 1851 - will get details at some point.
But they don't seem to be in Ayrshire 1861.

Hi Helen,
My error! - i should've said Charles & Agnes in 1851 - previous post now amended.
With them were Agnes 15, Susan 8, John 6.
