McGill Roger (Magell, Macgill etc.)

Post by ViHarding » Mon Mar 16, 2015 9:42 am

Help required with Roger/Rodger and various spellings of the surname.

I have struggled with this man for some considerable time now. Birth c. 1786. Unable to prove birth and unable to find marriage to a Mary?

I have a child Mary McGill b.1824 in Liverpool Lancashire. My records seem to imply that this Mary is a half sibling to a Margaret McGill B. 1812 in Lancashire.
I feel Roger may have married twice and both spouse names were Mary. Back to Roger, I have him in the 1841 Census he is living in Banastre St. Liverpool Age 55 and the person above him on the Census is Bridget Hendrick nee Murphy. Bridget figures on Baptism's of Roger's family.
The 1841 census states Bridget and Roger were Irish. However this depends on who gave the enumerator the information as we all know. I have previously come across records stating he is of Scottish decent and have now doubted them. I can find no record that proves either way. My only certainty is that Mary McGill married in Liverpool in 1852 and states her father is a Stonemason. I also have a rate book for 1760-1900 in Manchester for a warehouse it states he is a stonemason but doesn't give whether he is Irish or Scottish.

I have checked http://www.irishancestors.ie/ without feeling this is correct. I have checked http://www.lothiansfhs.org/ still not convinced.

I don't know why but I feel if Mary was of Irish decent - at that time if Catholic would she marry out of faith? Something is gnawing at this Irish connection and I have no idea how to solve this. ](*,) IF someone in Bridget's residence filled in the form or indeed gave the inf. to the census collator, then Roger being noted as Irish could easily be wrong.

Has anyone got any ideas please?
