John Dickson b. 1846 Aberdeenshire, Scotland
I am trying to find out who my ancestor John Dickson b. 1846 father and mother are. He was born in Aberdeen and married a Mary Jane Robertson. Others have posted his father was a John Dickson married to Mary Wyper. But the connection to Aberdeen then suddenly shifts to Dalkeith, Midlothian if that is the case, and I have always heard my Scottish ancestry came from the Aberdeen area. Can anyone help? Thanks so much! Richard Dickson

Hello Richard,
Did John and Mary get married in Scotland? If so, the marriage record should give his parents' names.
Best wishes,
Sarah

Freecen gives this family for 1851:
here they are before John was born:

There is a large age gap between the 2 eldest children Margaret at 18 and young John at 5, I wonder if there were perhaps 2 wives by the name of Mary? I look at John's [sen] death cert would help there [if the info was known]1841 Piece: SCT1841/683 Place: Dalkeith -Midlothian Enumeration District: 2

Hi Dicksonhawaii:
You may be able to narrow down likely parents by searching on FamilySearch.com.
There are a great number of John and Mary Dickson with daughter Margaret born in the same place and time period of the family in the 1841 census If you compared the results of a search on John and Mary Dickson who had a son born in the same place and time period of listed in the 1851 census, you may be able to narrow down the likely parents.
Following that, you could do a search of the likely couples for additional children who could fit in with any other known siblings or recurring family names.
With John and Mary, or in my case Joseph and Mary, combined with very common surnames, one hopes that they would have the good grace to give one of their children an outrageous first name to make things easier for those of us searching hundred(s) of years later
Good luck
Frances

I was so happy when I found a Basil in my grandmother's family. There must be a million John or James Munros out there!

Try also the Aberdeen & NE Scotland Family History Society. They have family trees on file. You can search their index online and order the ones you want to look at for a reasonable price. I found a lost relative this way. He was in South Africa.
