My granny, Helen Brand Mitchell Milne was born in Coatbridge in 1915. She has sister Bessie Mitchel(l) and a brother Frank Mitchel(l). She married John Smith Milne. Son of Thomas Rankin Milne who died in Palestine in the first world war.
Helen and John had a son Thomas Rankin Milne, My grandfather, who currently lives in Florida. He has a Cousin with the same name Thomas Rankin Milne, Near Glasgow (I'm assuming).. my grandpa hasn't been much help, I'm not sure if its due to old age or him being a miserable old man. I'm just praying I can link family. I was very close to my granny (Helen Brand Mitchel(l)) I knew her as granny scotty. She died, and I don't think any of her family knew. my mom was horrible. she paid no repect to her death. there wasn't an obituary and she didn't call any of her family members. But my granny always told me we had a lot of family and loved ones in scotland. I just want to know them, and them to know her.

Hi Aimee and welcome to Talking Scot,
I'm not sure if you are trying to go forward or backwards with your family.
There appears to be more than one person researching the Milne family - just google Thomas Rankin Milne.
If it's living relatives of your gran you are looking for then that will be a bit more difficult but not impossible. If you are in Scotland you can trace them by visiting a Family History Centre.
Let us know exactly what you are looking for and we'll try and help.
Regards,
Annette

I am pretty sure that this is your Gran's Grandfather with his daughter in 1901 at Coatbridge.
William P Bell 34
Ellen B Bell 33
Elizabeth Mitchell 11
Isabella Bell 1
Francis Mitchell 58 Father in law born Coatbridge, Music Seller, tobacconist, shopkeeper.
Francis Mitchell married Helen Brand in 1864 at Old Monkland.
They can be found easily enough on other census records.
You can confirm this and view Scottish birth, marriage and death records at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk starting with your gran.

Annette

OK, so i found the birth record. When I have added it into the cart to order, it has the date at 01/01/1915. I was given a birthdate for her of 11/14/1915 in the United States Death index. She was never a US citizen, so theres not much more info there...

Hi,
I'm maybe misunderstanding if you've ordered the birth record, but if you have it will confirm her parents, her father's occupation and their marriage date. You can then work backwards from there. It's worth mentioning if you haven't ordered the birth record then it's maybe worth waiting until January as it will become available to view online then (under the 100 year rule for birth records). This will still cost money for credits, but a lot less than ordering a copy of the certificate.
If you're trying to track down living descendants of your Granny's siblings then it can be an expensive option trying to do this with online searches on ScotlandsPeople as most of the records in question will not be freely available as they are too recent. This would mean you would have to order every certificate you were interested in. As Annette mentioned, doing this research in a Family History Centre is more viable as you can generally view as many records as you wish. So if you're coming to Scotland next year it would be a good idea to consider this option for your visit. If you want more information on this, then everyone here will be happy to weigh in with advice on where to go and how to book

Re: I'm Looking for Milne / Mitchell Family
Im questioning whether its really her birth certificate. Her birthday is Nov, 14th 1915.. but the date on the birth certificate that punks up is Jan. 1st 1915. I purchased credits on the scotlandspeople.com. and have been trying to research, but keep hitting dead ends.
I will plan to visit the family History Centre when I come. I was hoping to get in contact with living relatives of hers before i come, like her sisters or brothers children. Just so i could learn more about the family, hear family stories, tell them about granny in the states.
My mom thinks she has her old address book. I live on the west coast and my mom is in florida, so I'm also waiting for her to find that.
I can order granny's death certificate here in the states, but i have to provide my birth certificate, my moms, and my grandpas to show lineage to be able to order it. so I've ordered a new copy of mine, my grandpa hasn't responded and my mom is unreliable.
its just bit frustrating, doing this type of detective work!
Thank you all for all of your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Re: I'm Looking for Milne / Mitchell Family
When I look at an index record on SP - it gives a year only. When I add a record to the basket it always gives the date 01/01/YYYY (year of the birth/marriage/death). This does not mean the birth was on the 1st of the year. A birth from 1925 shows as 01/01/1925 & yours shows as 01/01/1915.
Were any of Helen's siblings born in Scotland before 1915? If you can find a birth pre 1915 you can download it now.

Re: I'm Looking for Milne / Mitchell Family
thank you! I just wanted to make sure of that before I ordered it!
I don't have any information for her siblings other than their given names. So i haven't been able to link her side.
