I believe my great Grandparents owned or ran the Victoria bar in Dundee around 1900.
My Great Grandfather was John Kennedy, residing at 24 Polepark Road Dundee.
He was involved in keeping the inebriates out of Pubs there.
I wondered if anyone had any more information on John Kennedy, like who he married, or any old photos of the Victoria bar possibly showing him too.
Thanks

Re: Victoria bar Dundee
Welcome to TS
Have you looked at the census records for him?
1901 & 1911 would be of interest to you, that would show his spouse and children [if he had them].
1901 & 1911 both have 29 John Kennedy's in Dundee , knowing his approx age will help narrow them down.
When do you have him living at Polepark Road? that seems to be the Lochee area which would narrow the census returns down a good bit.
What makes you think he's your GGrandfather?
presumably you know of his children and Grandchildren [your parents and grandparents] to have made the connection.
Sometimes it's easier to start with what you do know and work back.

Re: Victoria bar Dundee
I know he is my great Grandfather, I have the birth certificate of my Granny, and I remember my Mum telling me that Granny's parents ran a pub in Dundee.
I didn't know which one at first, then found on the certificate that the address then showed as Victoria Road Dundee above the Victoria pub.
I have been in touch with the library in Dundee, they are trying to find some information for me. I don't live there, but if they find anything, will try to get up to look for myself.
Thanks for your help Wilma

Re: Victoria bar Dundee
So if you have your Grandfather's birth cert, it will give both his parent's names and the date and place they were married.
Using that information, you can look on SP and get their marriage certificate which will give both of their parents' names.
Did you check the census for your grandfather's siblings?

This is a great site for old photos http://photopolis.dundeecity.gov.uk/ of Dundee. I had a wee search for your ancestor but no luck - maybe you'll find something.

Hope this is the right fellow, but, nevertheless, here's something to chew on.
The Courier and Argus (Dundee, Scotland), Wednesday, October 17, 1900
Dundee Licensing Court grants transfer of license for public house at 22 and 24 Polepark Road to John Kennedy. (Previous was Robert McMillan)
The 1912-13 Directory has his home address as Bromor, Old Muirton Road, Lochee. (was the same in 09-10 – try the 1911 census) http://www.mocavo.co.uk/The-Dundee-Dire ... 891732/353

Military Tribunal.
Two Brothers.
The case of other two brothers, John Kennedy (41), Polepark Road, and Francis Kennedy (32), 30 High Street, Lochee, both spirit merchants, was considered by the Tribunal. The military representative pointed out that one brother should go, and the other could carry on the two businesses. Mr John Kennedy pointed out that his brother who was passed in C1 category, was unable to carry on his own business and he had to supervise both businesses at present. He himself had been working at munitions in his spare time, and during the past nine months he had not lost an hour. His brother had also been working at munitions but had been laid up for sometime. All the money that they made at munitions went to the relatives of their employees who had enlisted. the Tribunal granted the brothers conditional exemption. John asked that his brother should be relieved of munitions for a while. Mr Spence--There is no use of the man killing himself.

Re: Victoria bar Dundee
Thanks so much Alan, I think it is him. Need to do some checking up of dates and maybe a visit to the library in Dundee to look at records.
Wow..so much you found out! I am a total novice at this, but find it all so interesting. Just sad I have no parents left I can ask about it all.
The only thing I really knew about was that Mum told me her Grandad ran a pub in Dundee. Not sure it was the Victoria bar though.
Funny thing is, none of my parents or grand parents drank alcohol! Quite against it really! Also had found out my great Grandfather on Dad's side was an alcoholic! haha
Fantastic work in finding all this for me Alan, many thanks again

Re: Victoria bar Dundee
The id still a pub on Polepark Road Dundee
Called Bissell's Bar and the Polepark Lounge
The close mouth is numbered 18 so I strongly suspect the pub is 22/24.
Was on the market in the recent past so a few inside photos are here : http://www.tspc.co.uk/schedule/108540.pdf
