David Paton & Janet or Isabella McDonald

Post by darylrodger » Tue Jan 26, 2016 11:09 pm

Hi,

I have another mystery regarding one of ancestors :? .

My 2 x great grandmother Mary Gillespie neè Paton (married to William Gillespie, Miller) died on 2 Dec 1894 in Paisley, (aged 66 yrs)
and her parents are stated as David Paton (Blacksmith) dec & Janet McDonald (dec). I've tried looking for her birth circa 1928 in Doune,
Perthshire but the only birth that comes up is a Mary Paton to David Paton & Isabel McDonald.

Mary married William Gillespie on 24 Nov 1848 in Kilmadock, Perthshire.

I've found a death for a David Paton on 22 May 1861 in Stockwell St, (aged 64 yrs) who was a Blacksmith by trade I'm wondering if he's Mary's father ?
His wife Isabella dies on 18 Nov 1865 at 57 Stockwell St. aged 81 yrs.

Are David & Isabella Mary's parents ? or is there a Janet McDonald out there that I can't find ?

Thanks,

Daryl

What about any siblings? Tracking them down could help solve the parents identity.
I had a quick look on freecen for them in 1841, but no obvious family popping up.

Hi WilmaM,

I had a look on Family Search & Ancestry, for any siblings born to David and Janet McDonald but can't find anyone. Nor can I find any marriage for them either.
I can only find children born to David and Isabel McDonald
who are;

Marion b. 1824 Glasgow
David b. 1827 Kilmadock, Perthshire
James b. 1830 Kilmadock, Perthshire

I'm beginning to think either the informant who registered my 2 x great grand mother's death got her name wrong, (it was Mary's widow William) or David remarried to an Isabel
(who could be a sister) or it's the wrong family.

Hi Daryl
Of all the certificates Death entries are the ones most likely to contain incorrect information. Even into the 1960's my sister-in-law referred to her mother-in-law as "Mrs Rowan" and probably had no clue what her maiden surname was. The Registrar had to accept the information he was given so wrong entries are common.
I think you are on the right track with parents David and Isabel.
