Help with decyphering town name.....

I posted this image in the hope someone maybe able to shed some light on what it says.

The reason I believe it refers to a town is that elswhere on the fiche from which it was printed other town names are recorded in the same manner.

The reading I get is Ripiliny, Ripiling of Rigiliny, Rigiling. I've spent hours searching various sources but it looks like nothing, I've restricted my searching to County Down as I know they were married in Castlewellan.

It however might be a term for something else as it was taken from a poor law application.

Thanks for taking time to look.

Hi,

I take it to be Ripiliny too and C.D. I take to mean County Down.

Fortunately there are some very knowledgable people on here with regard to Ireland so I'm sure one of them will be able to shed some light on it for you.

Regards,

Alison

Hello Alex,

perhaps it is Rathfriland, to the west of Castlewellan on the way to Newry. A search using "Rathfriland" and "pronounced" reveals that it is pronounced Raafrelion, which could be heard as what has been transcribed.

On the cert it's written Rifriling and I concur with Sporran, Rathfriland it should be.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Thanks for your excellent responses, my English pronounciation of Rathfriland caused me to reject it.

On comparing other occasions of the letter F on the document I can now see that this is what this character is.

Thank you.

Alex.
