Terence Ryan - 5 yr Prison Sentence

Post by darylrodger » Sat Jun 04, 2016 9:06 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know where I could find out details relating to a criminal case regarding Terence Ryan, and why he served 5 years in prison ? He lived in Govan in Glasgow,
and was born on 18 Apr 1928 in Plantation, Glasgow.

I've been asked by a friend to find out on their behalf.

Thanks.

Regards,

Daryl

If you know when he was convicted, I’d start by searching local newspapers for reports on his trial.

Hi Elwyn,

Yes, that's the first thing I thought of doing and have had a look at the Glasgow newspapers but haven't found anything yet.
Unfortunately, I don't know when he was convicted, which makes things more difficult so I guess I'll have to spend time going through records.

I think a visit to the Mitchell next week will possibly help to find some info.

Thanks,

Daryl

Google News Archive has online:

Glasgow Herald 1806-1990. https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid= ... de=2&hl=en

Evening Times 1951-1990. https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid= ... de=2&hl=en

The Bulletin 1951-1960. https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid= ... de=2&hl=en

The search facility is useless 99.9% of the time so you'll have to browse.

Best of luck,
Alan

As he served 5 years this would indicate that the sentence was imposed under Solemn Procedure at either the Sheriff & Jury Court or at the High Court (more likely at the High Court)

Unfortunately although he lived in Govan the crime may not have taken place there - if it was nearby or in Glasgow Sheriffdom the Glasgow Sheriff Court Records may be your best bet - unfortunately there is a closure period on these records (75 years for some and 100 for others).
If the sentence was imposed by the High Court this could have well have happened at any of the major Court Sittings in Scotland regardless of where the crime occurred but once again there is a closure period attached to these records. (The High Court sat in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Perth with occasional Circuits to other areas).

If your man is deceased you could try the Scottish Prison Service http://www.sps.gov.uk/home/Contact-Us-General.aspx
