McCallums of Glassary

Post by MagsK » Tue Sep 13, 2016 6:42 pm

My grandfather Lachlan McCallum born 1869 in N Knapdale was raised in Glassary where his uncle Neil McCallum farmed a property called Dalnahasaig. My great grandfather, Neil's brother was John McCALLUM born 1826 in Glassary. John and Neil's father wa also John McCALLUM born 1772. The patriarch of this branch of McCallums was Angus McCALLUM, born 1744. All this information was obtained from a family bible along with dates of birth, marriages and deaths but there is nothing before Angus. I know he married, Ann (Nancy) Leitch in 1771 in Glassary and had one son, John. I have seen branches of the same tree now in Canada, the US and Australia but their information is all derived from the same family bible.
My questions are: is Dalnahasaig still farmed and if so by whom? And does anybody have any information on Angus McCallum or his wife Nancy's family? I have checked parish records on Scotland's People but find only one Angus born 1743 to a Daniel McCallum, no mother listed but I don't think this is the same Angus as the birth year is off and there are no subsequent Daniels in a family that followed the naming traditions in each generation. I have found nothing on Nancy Leitch.
I now live in the US, therefore my research is all being done online at the moment. Can anybody help? Or suggest where to try next?

A Google search for the farm brings up this http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2082408
A ruined farm, so if the land is farmed its not from the old spot.
The name Dalnahasaig is more commonly found as a bigpipe tune!

You may finds this site useful http://www.knapdalepeople.com/
The is a searchable database of Knapdale people and estate papers.

A look at the national library of Scotland map pages may help too.

Hi MagsK,

See Dalnahasaig on Streetmap:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=18 ... 93630&lm=0

See the aerial view of Dalnahasaig on Google Maps:

Much can be found about the area by googling the Moine Mhor National Nature Reserve, which pretty much surrounds Dalnahasaig.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thank you for the responses. I will follow up on your suggestions. I have since discovered through excerpts from Allan Begg's book Deserted Settlements of Glassary Parish that the last occupant of Dalnahasaig was Hugh McCallum who left in 1974. I am trying to find a copy of the book.

I have checked the library's website and it looks like I will need to email and ask if they can ship to the U.S. Thanks for the suggestion.

Looking at the google earth photograph, the farm buildings are roofless ruins with no sign of any comparatively recent road access. I'd be very surprised if it had been inhabited in 1974. More like 1874.
