Donald McInnes and Ann McLean married on Coll in 1825. They had sons Neil and Lachlan before 1833. We know they then had John, born 1834 and had always presumed he was born on Coll as mentioned on his death certificate. However the 1881 census showed him and his family living in Columshill St Rothesay Bute and his birthplace as being Rothesay. John McInnes (of Dunoon) married Marion McGilvray (1st marriage) in 1859 and the marriage certificate stated both parents deceased. Marion and 1st child Sarah both deceased by 1860.
For many years I have been trying to locate Donald and Ann from 1833 till their deaths. Presuming they left Coll before John's birth in 1834 but to where? Any ideas please? Would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Beverley,
John and family were at Colmshill Street in 1871 as well. He is shown as born in Coll on that census. His unmarried brother Neil, aged 40 born Coll, is also in the household as is an aunt, Isa Mclean aged 65 from Coll, who is described as Housekeeper.
Isa Mclean died at Colmshill Street in 1878, aged 72. the informant of the death was her nephew John Mcinnes. Her parents were Lachlan McLean, Farmer dec'd and Isabella McLean ms Mclean. It would seem likely that these are the parents of John's mother Ann also
Neil McInnes, son of Donald McInnes and Ann McLean was baptised at Tyree on 2nd December 1830 according to the igi.
Regards,
Isobel (Edinburgh)

McInnes / McLean
Isobel - thanks so much - you have shed light on this family that we haven't known before, and confirmed for us the parentage of Ann. It is still a puzzle to me that John states his birthplace as Coll in this census but in the 1881 as Rothesay Bute. I'm not surprised that Neil was still living with them. He eventually emigrated to NZ with John and his family in 1883.
Have no doubt that the 'housekeeper' is certainly the sister of Ann. Ann and Donald named their second son Lachlan which would tie in with Scottish naming patterns.
Will have to keep searching though for the deaths of Donald and Ann.
I appreciate your help very much.
Blessings!
Bev
