New York State .....

Post by Rab » Wed Oct 19, 2005 2:17 pm

Can anyone recommend the best site, or sites, for genealogy in the New York state. I'm particularly looking in Erie County and Brooklyn. The years range from 1885 onwards. I've got all I can from Ancestry.com in terms of the census data and also got some great information from Ellis Island. The SSDI turned up one name but doesn't really give enough information.

Cheers

Hi Rab ...
With the SSDI information, you can request a copy (for yet another fee  ) of the original "Form SS5", the Application for a Social Security Number. I did this for a couple of my targets, and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information, all in the applicant's own handwriting, including full name, address, birthdate, location of birth; parent information (names, places of birth -- although this might be only the country); name and address of employer (if employed).

Thanks JayPee.

That sounds like alot of good information. I'm sure I looked into it before and it was quite expensive. It was also quite a length of time to wait too if I remember right. That might just be for the UK though but I'll certainly look into again.

That information though could be the key I'm looking for with one individual in particular so might be worth the expense. Do you know if a female is listed my her married name or maiden name? I'm hoping it's the former.

Cheers

You might want to take a look at the following free sites: www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/eagle/ for an online Brooklyn newspaper 1841-1902 & www.italiangen.org for naturalization, marriage & death databases for the New York City area including the borough of Brooklyn.

Thanks Gina I'll have a look at those. I had one relation I believe went to NY from Liverpool in 1884 and was still alive in the 1930 Federal Census. I've got various things that point to it being him but no concrete proof. He appears to have lived in Kings throughout that time so those links could be useful- thanks.

Rab,
I have access to the NYTimes online archives through 2 genealogical societies as well as through my subscription to the paper. Let me know if you want me to check for your relative. I've found lots of obits, marriage announcements, and even some passenger lists for people who lived in Kings County.

Gina

Gina,

Thanks. That would be great if you could have a look. This is what I know about the relative in Kings County:

Name John Russell Marr
Born 21/08/1856 in Tradeston, Glasgow.
Occupation Brass Founder/Moulder
Parents Robert Marr (Brass Founder) and Marion Russell.
1871 UK Census Dwelling in Liverpool, England with family
1881 UK Census Does not appear in any of the UK censuses.
1880-90 Brooklyn Telephone Dir Appears 3 times at various addresses.
1910 US Census Appears as head of household at 23-wd Brooklyn, Kings, NY with a wife named Mary J Marr from New Jersey (aged 40y). His age is wrong (recorded as 48y when he should have been 53y) but his name, birthplace, parents birthplace and occupation are all correct. His Immigration date is recorded as 1885.
1920 US Census Appears as a roomer in Brooklyn, Kings, NY. This time the age is spot on (63y) as are all other details. The immigraton date has changed to 1886. It also states his status as married.
1930 US Census Does not appear.

I reckon he must have died between 1820 and 1830. That would still have made him a good age- for a male Marr.

Cheers

Rab
