Re Death Away From Home

Post by ASGROOMBRIDGE » Fri Oct 21, 2005 12:53 pm

Hi Everyone,

It has always puzzled me as to why my 2 x great grandmother died at 49 St Ninian Street, Glasgow on the 14/9/1856 when the family lived in Annan. Her cause of death was Phthisis 2 years which I belive to be a form of TB .She was seen by a Surgeon the day before her death.
She had lost a son only four months before who had died aged 3 months, she was still in Annan when he was born in February.

Was this a sanitorium (did they have them in those day's) :?:

It just seems a long way to take a dying woman (over 90 miles).

Her Burial was in the Burial Ground Gorbals, Glasgow as certified by Alex Loudon Inspector of the Poor. I am assuming she was placed in a Paupers grave.

Regards,
Audrey

Could she have come from Glasgow originally? I believe that if her family origins were in Glasgow, if she applied for help from the parish poor fund in Annan, the Poors Inspector there would have been within his rights to have her shipped to her original parish, which would have been responsible for her upkeep.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Indeed they had sanitoriums in those days, but I'm at a loss to know why the air in Glasgow City would be seen as better for her condition compared to rural Dumfriesshire, unless it was somewhere on the outskirts of Glasgow where that might just have been the case.......

I've just seen on another post (a census look up from Jack) that St Ninian Street was in the Gorbals which would fit with the burial.

1841 cens 644-2 Ed 70 p 6 (Gorbals - Hutchesontown)
St. Ninian Street.

Perhaps there was nobody at home to take care of her but relatives/friends in Glasgow. She may have been attempting to establish residence in area with possibly better opportunities for any other children.
Where was her Husband? A horrible thought is that he might have been abandoning her somewhere he wouldnt need to be responsible for her or conversely somewhere maybe the Surgeon had recomended :? as she saw him the day before her Death-but presumably she was already in Glasgow by then
Your right Phthisis was TB but not spoken about in polite society. She may also have been sent away to Isolation but I am almost certain that wouldnt have been the policy as early as then.

Hi Audrey
The fact that yer rellie was buried in the Southern Necropolis is not surprising, and would not be a pauper's grave.
What a lot of people do not realise, that the church paid for these burials out of the poor fund .
If you look at the Kirk records in most parishes, you will see some strange “verdicts” frae the church elders.
I have records showing that if you had a child out of wedlock you were fined £2.
If it was adultery that you committed you had to pay £5, or/and appear before the whole congregation for six weeks in a row.
These fines were put into the “Fund” to help with burials etc.
Nowadays we would call it Insurance

Hi everone,
Thanks for the replies,

Joette,
Her husband registered the death and they were still living in Annan at the time as were Lucinda's parents, so not abandoned thank goodness. Family stayed on in Annan after her death although her husband did marry again.

Dave,
Might try and find the grave thanks for that Dave.

regards,
Audrey

Hi all
I'm confused now. :? I thought Gorbals Burial Grounds and the Southern Necropolis were two different burial grounds:

Gorbals Burial Grounds - In 1715 the inhabitants of the Gorbals bought some land ...for use as a burial ground
http://www.theglasgowstory.com/image.php?inum=TGSE00713
with more info at:
http://www.southernnecropolis.com/page30.html

Southern Necropolis - opened in the year 1840
http://www.southernnecropolis.com/

They are obviously very close to each other by the looks of things but are they next door to each other? Did the first (or part of the first) turn into the second?

later - they are both on www.old-maps.co.uk as separate burial grounds.
Grid ref: 259500,663488 should show them both - the Southern Necropolis is easy to spot - big rectangles, then a little way north of that is the (much smaller) Burial Ground. Just spotted the Govan Poorhouse over to the west of the the Southern Necropolis too.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thank you, Lesley, for the Gorbals Burial Ground link. In it I found a photo of one of my great Uncle's Funeral Director's business.
