Post by Eliza » Sat Oct 29, 2005 10:00 am

Looking for relatives of my Grandmother Mary Ellen Cairns
who lived in Falkirk but had links in Linthigow. She married Hugh Sharp Daisley in 1904. Thanks

Hullo Eliza

Welcome to TalkingScot!

Have you searched the 1891, 1901 Census on ScotlandsPeole for your grandmother? There are not many Mary Cairns of a suitable age living in Stirlingshire, only one in Falkirk in 1901. The Census returns may well give you other family names, ages and places of birth to help you search further .

Do you actually have your grandmother's mariage certificate? That may give firther hints, names of family members who were witnesses for instance.

Do hope some of this helps.

Best wishes
Catriona

I do have her Marriage Cert. Its says Father William Cairns Mother Elizabeth i cant read her maiden name. Witness by W Archie Daisley
& Agnes Docherty
I did try to find William who married a Elizabeth no luck i've lots of searches. Where did you find your Mary Ellen? i must be doing something wrong.Any help would be great. Tried Linthigow as well because my Mother was born there. But i think Mary may have went to relatives to have baby.
Did well on My Mums Dads side but i am really stuck on the Cairns.thanks Liz

Hullo again Liz

I must confess that I didn't find any hits either in Stirlingshire or Linlithgow for Mary+ several wild card variations of Ellen. So thought I would try Mary on her own. Census entries don't necessarily give the name as on Birth Certificate. As only two Marys showed up for Stirlingshire, I thought it might be worth your while having a peep.

Liz

Why don't you upload the Mariage Certificate to the Gallery. Someone may be able to help you decifer Elizabeth's maiden surname/

All the best

Hi Liz

Great news that you are on the trail again.

"DO" usually means "ditto". on a Census search.

If you have any more querys, we'll be delighted to join in your search for the answers.

Happy hunting
