where do I start? .....

Not a lot of traffic on this board, but I hope someone might be able to give me a pointer.

I've found an ancestor in the 1861 census - George Bateman in Dunipace, Stirling - who was born in "Wales" - wife Lucinda (Woods) born "Ireland". I know George died in 1865 in Scotland, his children were born in Lanarkshire from about 1846 onwards. I've not been able to find a marriage for this pair. The 1861 gave me hope - hah they'll have been married in Wales I thought. But alas, no sign of them. George's death cert shows his parents as James Bateman and Catherine Melbourne - no sign of a marriage for them either - there is a John Bateman and Christiana Milburn but no son George listed. The Informant was George's daughter who was quite a young lass at the time, and her father died in the most horrible circumstances, so perhaps she wasn't thinking straight, or just didn't know her grandparents names.

On IGI I found a George of about the right age born to James Bateman and Catherine Lloyd but I think he may have died in Wales (someone told me they'd seen this on IGI but I haven't been able to get on the site to check it). A glimmer of hope though, is that this family had another son called Isaac - a family name that's been relentlessly passed down the generations.

If anyone has a clue where I could start, I'd be really grateful. Thanks.

don't know if you have resolved this one or not but I would try to concentrate on the Children's birth if after 1855 these is a chance that their marriage will be shown on their birth details

No I haven't got any further with this one. I have birth details for several children (those born after 1855). Unfortunately they're from 1856 to 1859 - so miss out on the marriage details.

Perhaps the 1841 census will give me a clue when it arrives - the first child was born about 1846 in Scotland so they must have married (whatever form that took) before then. If I find them on the 1841 census, together or separate, I'll get a clue about when they left Wales & Ireland. I think

I'd really just like to know where in Wales he was born. Hey ho.

Found this on IGI but don't know if its relevant - what age did George give on the 1861 census?

Hello Lesley

I think this is the entry I found, and managed to track down (lost the place with where) that the Catherine was Lloyd. George gives his age as 47 on the 1961 census, and in 1865 when he died, he was 52 so the dates fit. The parents James and Catherine had a number of children, the names of whom coincide with names passed down through my lot, so it may well be correct. Also Flintshire was a a big mining area which also fits as George was variously ironstone miner, coal miner etc everywhere I've found him.

There's a lot riding on these new eagerly awaited censuses, is there not!
