Greetin's All
Frae an exremely dreich Mount Flo.
Trying to find some info on Mosshouse Farm and Bridge Castle Mansion.
I know Joseph Neilson was living on the farm in 1881.
Are either still in existence.
I mean the Farm and Mansion, not Joseph.

Hi Davie

If it was me you were referring to in the post, I'm afraid, despite what you may have deduced from my username, I can't help you as I know next to nothing about that part of Scotland - I live nowhere near Bathgate and I've only travelled through it once, I think. :?

Hope someone else can help you out with this one!

Best wishes

Lesley (not from Bathgate...)

I found a reference to Mosshouse Farm as a Local wildlife site, on the West Lothian Local Plan.

The grid reference is NS882669, which would place it at Blackridge, west of Armadale, A current map shows that there is a building bearing the same of Mosshouse in that general area.

To tie in with that, there is a Bridge Castle, [marked as a Hotel] to the North of Armadale before the village of Westfield. Other buildings around there carry on the bridge or castle themes.

But they are all nearer Bathgate [ where Lesley doesn't live] than any of the Calders - Mid, East or West !

I can't find anything else anywhere closer to Mid Calder.

Westfield and Torphichen are next door to each other.

Muiravonside area ends about there too, I can never remember just where Falkirk starts and West Lothian ends - butI've a feeling the river Avon is the boundry there to Torphichen is in WL.

These places can both be seen on the 1890s parish map at http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... _list.html

Select sheet 31 - Airdrie. On that map click on the Torphicen parish - the green coloured one east of the centre of the map. At the south-most point of the parish, you will find Mosshouse, just west of Blackridge.

To find Bridge Castle, zoom out again to see the whole of Torphicen parish. Then click on the narrow part of the parish just over halfway up the parish to zoom in on that area. Immediately south-west of the narrow part is Bridge Castle.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thanks again all,
The map was great Andrew.
Will be able to show the cousin the places when she visits from Fourecks next year.
