Looking For Help With The Glass Family.....

Post by JohnGlass » Fri Nov 11, 2005 8:42 am

Our Research has come to a brick wall, and I would appreciate suggestions as to where we go from here.
Our particular Glass family we have been able to trace back from South Australia to Scotland until 1810.
In 1810 on 27 May, there was a Marriage of Findlay Glass to Christian Campbell, Barony,Lanark,Scotland. We can find no birth records for Findlay to continue.

This is a bit tricky, because although they were married in Barony three children seem to have been born in Kilmallie, Argyll.

One of the sons, John, became a Soda Water Manufacturer, he married a Jane Gilmour and produced a few children.

John died in 1858 but his father was NOT listed as deceased, Christian Cambell had died by then.

No sign of a Scottish death for Findley (who was a ships carpenter).
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Also, there is a baptism of a Finlay Glass in 1804 Killearnan, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

There was sometimes a great many years difference between births and christenings.

Glass Family

The 1841 census lists the following at Finniston, Harroch Street, Barony

Finlay Glass age 56 Ships Carpenter born outside Lanarkshire
Ann Glass age 36 born outside Lanarkshire
James Glass 20 born outside Lanarkshire

Malcom Glass is listed at Clyde Street Barony. He married Ann Latta in 1838 and four children are listed in the igi- William 1839. James 1841, Malcolm 1843 and Duncan 1846

Census entry is quite strange!
Malcom Glass Aerated Water Manufacturer 25 born outside Lanarkshire
Mary Glass 20 born outside Lanarkshire
William Glass 2 born Lanarkshire
James Glass 2 months born Lanarkshire
Ann Latta Female Servant 15 born outside Lanarkshire

Isobel

Thank you Andy and Isobelc for your prompt replies
Andy-The info you have given is in line with what my records show.I have not been able to find any information whatever on Findlay(Finlay) or Christian Campbell, apart from the Marriage and his Occupation.
Findlay had four sons,Malcolm/John/William/Archibald.Archibald is my GGG Grandfather.
Re the baptism in 1804,the 1841 Census lists him as 56,so it does not seem likely?
Isobelc-Yes that Census in 1841 did pose extra questions for me.
I have no records for Ann(36) or James(20)who were with him or their relationship. Also the Mary(20) with Malcolm is a mystery.

Hi everyone

I don't want to lead you up the garden path here
but there is an 1861 census entry for a Finlay Glais - (actually it says Glass when you read it ) in Urquhart, Ross and Cromarty . He is 76 , a carpenter and living with wife Anne aged 56 , born Urray Ross shire, and his brother William Glass aged 68 , a crofter born Urquhart.

The above Anne dies 1886 in Urquhart, a widow, Finlay's occupation given as crofter this time. Parents were George Gray ann Ann MacKenzie. Age given as "about 80" , informant was an attendant.

The Igi gives a marriage of Finlay Glass and Ann Gray
09 JAN 1842 Barony, Lanark, Scotland

So I'm thinking that the Ann on the 1841 census is possibly Finlay's wife to be ie that these are the same people as in 1861 ( same ages, same occupation ? )

But I couldn't spot this Finlay's death .....

Hi,

I can't see Finlay's death either, but his brother William died in Urquart on 27th April 1876 aged 82. He was single and the informant was his sister in law Ann Glass. Parents were John Glass and Catherine Gray(married Urquart 1780). There is another Glass death recorded in Urquart in 1862 of a Catherine Glass whose mother's name was Gray, so this may be a sister of Findlay and William.. Her married name was McGregor.

Given the Barony marriage of Finlay Glass and Ann Gray in 1842. I'm pretty sure that these are the same people that Sally found in the 1861 census.

Regards,
Isobel (Edinburgh)

Thanks for the latest Sally and Isobel
It looks like the brick wall is coming down a bit.
I did note the Marriage of Findlay and Ann in 1842,but did not link it with the Ann Glass in the 1841 Census.
Although there appears to be no Birth or Death records for Findlay, can it be assumed that his parents were John And Catherine?
Really do appreciate the work you are doing

John

With the above info I was able to trace back further thru IGI.
I now have a choice, with a Birth and seek advise.
A James Glass born 9 Nov 1731 in Elgin or a James Glasse born 14 Jan 1731 in Urquhart. The parents of James are from Urquhart, and James married in Urquhart.Elgin is close by,the other is a different spelling of the surname.
Thanks

John
