Are there any others searching out there for Thorburns in the Coldingham area? I have managed to get back to c1777 and have most of the bmd dates. However I am trying to find out where two branches of the family link up. Here's where the link starts:
William Wilson m. Jane Colven - on the marriage cert it says that they were 2nd cousins.
William's mother was Wilhelmina Margaret Thorburn b. c1801 Coldingham and her parents were William Thorburn b. c1777 and Isabella Brown b. c1786 Coldingham.
Jane's mother was Elizabeth Colven m.s. Thorburn and her parents were Robert Thorburn b. c1788 and Jean Darrie b. c1786 Coldingham.
Perhaps the marriage cert., should have said 2nd cousins once removed. I am still hunting for William's [1777] birth although his Pensioner papers from the National Archives states that he was born in Coldingham. I believe that Robert's parents were Robert Thorburn and Elizabeth Moseley but can't find a positive link with William as their son.
Hoping to make a breakthrough one day!

Good evening Rach
Looking at the IGI for all the births/christenings in Coldingham, I see that only the female names have been indexed. This is apparently the case for a number of parishes.
If memory serves me right, in a case like this, it should be possible to view the microfilms and find the male b/c at a local LDS Centre.
All the best for your research.
Catriona

Hi Catriona,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I have come across this problem with the male records in Coldingham but just thought that it was my awful research skills! Will access the LDS records next year.
