Benjamin Clarkson is my ggrandfather who is listed in the 1900 Census of the state of Washington USA. States emigration was in 1882 to US. I am searching for this family between this census of 1871 in Scotland to Washington state. Early children, including my grandmother were born in Pennsylvania: Fallbrook. Thank you for any help that may be offered.

Hi Judy

Glad to help! Do you have any idea if the whole family immigrated together or did some remain in Scotland?

There is a James Clarkson that came through Philadelphia in April 1888 age 18 but at the moment I'm unable to view the original image  . He would be of the right age to be Benjamin's little brother but no others appear to be traveling with him. So far no sign of Benjamin but I'll keep looking....

Best wishes
Jean

James Clarkson Immigration

Post by Judy Thompson » Mon Nov 28, 2005 2:56 am

Hi Jean, I see from the census of 1900 that Benj immigrated in 1882, his wife Annie Campbell Hendry immigrated in 1888. From some of my initial research I am beginning to think the Clarkson/Hendry families knew each other before PA. So, I am wondering if they did come at various different times. My mother recalls Annie speaking of her father making two trips before the whole family came over, but I cannot find the Hendry family either. I knew Annie, my ggrandmother, but Benj died in 1917. Annie immigrated with her family Andrew Hendry father and Margaret Drysdale, mother. They were all from the Falkirk area, but
I have not persued the census on that family. Wouldn't you know it the 1890 census in the US is the critical one... But I will check out the county records in the area of Fallbrook PA.

Do you think this is my James?
CLARKSON, JAMES (Census 1861 599/00 011/00 010)

Thanks, Judy

Hi Judy

A search of the IGI gives the parents of Benjamin to be James Clarkson and Agnes Hamilton. Using these names for a parent search gives the following offspring...

1. JAMES CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 07 DEC 1871 Auchinleck, Ayr, Scotland

2. ELIZABETH GOLD CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 10 JAN 1857 Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland

3. GEORGE CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 30 NOV 1862 Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland

4. THOMAS CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 28 NOV 1858 Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland

5. ANDREW CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 20 SEP 1866 Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland

6. AGNES CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 13 JUL 1860 Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland

7. BENJAMINE BAILLIE CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 29 JAN 1869 Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland

8. JAMES MCLUCKIE CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 14 JUL 1864 Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland

9. MARGARET CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 19 MAY 1855 Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland

I haven't viewed the 1861 census image you referred to but you should be able to tell if it's your family based on the inclusion or exclusion of children in the above list. Also you should note that there is a daughter born in 1855. This would be worth viewing on Scotlands People as that first year of statutory record keeping gives good data :D James and Agnes were married in 1854......

JAMES CLARKSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 21 MAY 1854 Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland

I'm looking for the Hendry family in 1881 and will let you know what I find.

I know the feeling well about the missing 1890 US Census. I have a few of my own that are lost in that 20 year span :(

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean, Thank you so very much for the information you have come up with. I have been jumping from site to site, and of course get side tracked and .... lost. I have a lot to learn! Genealogists are so friendly and you have just reinforced that belief. :D I recently took my 86 year old mother to Edinburgh to see her grandmother's homeland. That trip has my husband and I planning a trip in April 2006. Must part ways for food and water. Later, and again thanks, Judy

Hi Judy

Lucky you to travel to Edinburgh 8) ! I hope to get there myself one of these days!

A search for your Hendry family in 1881 was a bit of a toughie and I'm not 100% certain this is them.....but I suspect it could be. Unfortunately Annie's birth and their marriage do not appear on the IGI so I went looking on SP just to try and confirm their wedding time and place. You should have no prob viewing the record as there is only one....here is the search details....

1873 HENDRY ANDREW DRYSDALE MARGARET FALKIRK LANDWARD STIRLING 479/02 0073

This Certificate will give you their parents names so is worth a peek :D

As for the 1881 Cenus....well....this is what I come up with...(a very poor transcription or an enumerator that did poorly.... )

Dwelling: Jawcraig
Census Place: Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203540 GRO Ref Volume 479-2 EnumDist 12 Page 23
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Head HENDRY M 30 M Camelon, Stirling, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Coal Miner
Margaret HENDRY M 26 F Airdrie, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Ann HENDRY 6 F Polmont, Stirling, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
William HENDRY 4 M Polmont, Stirling, Scotland
Rel: Son
Peter ? HENDRY U 1 m M Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
Rel: Son

Perhaps you'll know if Ann had two brothers and this is the right family!

Best wishes
Jean
