Jimmy "Napoleon" McMenemy famous Celitc player ear

Post by delmarco » Tue Nov 29, 2005 8:24 pm

Good day all:

I'm hoping one of you will have a suggestion on how to find a bio on this man. My brothers and I were told growing up that he was the elder brother of our grandfather Thomas McMenemy. A cousin in scotland says that it couldnt be, a cousin perhaps. There is a James buried in the family plot, dob 1883-1944. Another source wrote in to Mcmenemy.org and gave the info that he was born in 1882 and died in 1965. I cant seem to find a record of marriage or death, I know he had at least two sons, Harry and Joe. Can anyone help with this one?????

Thanks,
Karen
Make it a great day!

Lesley:
I had seen the article previously, but re-read it carefully, it does say that he lived to see them win in 1965, Now If I could just find out who mhe married, I could either prove or discredit the stories we were told. Thank you so much for finding that article!

Warm Regards,
Karen

Hi Karen
There are 22 matches on one page on SP for a marriage of James Mcmenemy in the whole of Scotland between 1898-1929. Worth having a look at I would think. Its probably towards the beginning of the 1898-1910 area (7 records in this time range) if "his son John won a cup medal for Celtic in 1927."

Best wishes

Lesley:
Oh, Ive seen that page, I was one of the contributors!! Another person, named Jeff actually provided that info on James however, you are so sweet to help me, I really appreciate it, I did also e-mail the Mitchell Library to see if there are any books on him, or at least about the Celtic team that may have amention of a wife. I had no luck searching for his sons birth certificates either.
I'll keep looking!
Kind Regards,
Karen

Hello Karen,

I searched SP and there is a James McMenamin age 10 in 1891 census and 20 in 1901 census living in Rutherglen who might be worth a look.

You probably have this info as well

Jimmy McMenemy was one of Celtic FC's greatest players.

He made his debut for Celtic in a 3-0 victory over Port Glasgow on 22nd November 1902, scoring in the process. Between then and 1919 he made 515 appearances and scored 168 goals. He was part of the famous Celtic team that won six league titles in a row between 1904 and 1910, and was part of the team that defeated Rangers 3-2 in the 1904 Scottish Cup Final after being down 2-0.

He was master strategist, nicknamed "Napoleon", he led the club through a period of huge success. He won 11 League Championship titles and six Scottish Cup medals before the first World War intervened. He left the club in 1920 after 515 senior appearances and 168 goals. Between 1934 and 1940 he was the trainer/coach at Celtic Park.
He also played for Partick Thistle between 1920 and 1922, and won the Scottish Cup with them in 1921. There is picture of Jimmy if you follow this link.

Jimmy had (at least) two sons, John and Harry who played football. John was capped for Scotland in October 1933. Harry was picked to play in the game, but had to pull out through injury. John took his place. (Scotland beat Wales 3-2).

Harry obviously missed his chance. He was never capped for Scotland.

A further son, Joe McMenemy, son of Celtic legend "Napoleon", was in Sligo when he rescued Lilly Fallon from drowning in Lough Gill. This tale is told in the story of Sean Fallon who also played for Celtic. (Follow the link, and search for McMenemy.

Mary:
Yes I did know all that prior to my search, I thank you just the same, perhaps you may know what does "capped" mean? being from the states, I have zero knowledge of these terms.
Thank you again for your post,
Warm Regards,
Karen
