Ireland - research .....

Post by Kathy » Fri Dec 02, 2005 11:09 pm

Presently, I am feeling rather annoyed, see post “Born in Ireland – where do I start my search in Ireland” Sept 2005.

I have one set of ancestors that I know originate in County Cavan, and with having no luck doing research from a distance, and there being no avenue on the web for doing my own research, I decided to take the plunge, I requested two searches at a cost of 90 euro each, this converts to $298au, that was back mid November. I received the receipt for the credit card transaction today, and also a note to say, they deal with request in rotation, and that researchers are currently working on enquiries received in January 2005.

At this rate, it will be another ten months before I can hope to move forward with my research, and County Cavan was the only county I actually knew, how can I expect to move forward with the rest of my research when all I have is “born in Ireland”.

Can't see in your first thread if you have info on where the family was in Scotland. If they were in the West of Scotland, - Greater Glasgow plus large parts of the surrounding counties then there's a chance that members may have applied for poor relief, and there's a chance that the inspectors' report on their application survives. It is often the case in these reports that the townland of birth is given.

Hi David,

It would be possible, that on arrival in Scotland, they may have needed assistance, all that I have located so far have been in the Port Glasgow, Greenock area of Renfrewshire.

I would certainly like to give your suggestion a try, can you tell me where I would look up the poor relief records?

The Mitchell Library in Glasgow and various other libraries in the West of Scotland. Various TS members are in there regularly.

Don't rule out the possibility of an application for poor relief later on, - no different from various social security allowances today.

Thanks David,

I will post a request on the Scotland page, perhaps someone will do a lookup for me at the library.
