Wereabouts of St Marks Par Church Glasgow (1890) please.....

Post by LesleyB » Sat Dec 03, 2005 5:48 pm

Hi all
My brain feels totally shredded after an afternoon in the Scotsman archives and as a result I'm not having much luck locating the above church.
The minister in April 1890 was a Rev. Robert Stewart, according to the Scotman. Does anyone know anything about it? (I realise there may be several of us with non-functioning brains by this point.... )

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
I think this is where I was christened. At some point it was in Shettleston, then I suppose boundaries moved it to Carntyne.
The original was burnt down, and it was rebuilt much smaller.
It borders Parkhead / Shettleston.

Hi Cathy
Thanks for your reply. I must admit though I'm a bit confused by this one - I'd had a look at http://www.glasgowchurches.org.uk/ then the churches directory then list by alphabetical and I noted there were two St Marks, including the one you know of:

St Marks Burnside, Fernhill Road, Rutherglen &
St Marks Shettleston, Muiryfauld Drive, Glasgow

...but they both seem to be Catholic churches, and this doesn't quite fit with what I know about the family concerned. Could one of the St Marks maybe have been the Parish Church of Rev. Robert Stewart in 1890?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

I had a look to see what I could find after reading your post yesterday, but only came up with Catholic chuches called St. Marks. There is another one, St. Marks Catholic Church, St. Mark Street, Glasgow G32 7EA. However these didn't seem to me to be what you were looking for.

I'm sure there'll be info. out there somewhere, it's just a matter of keep digging! The church itself has quite likely gone the way of so many others - demolished. The church in Glasgow where my mum and dad married in 1943 is now a brewery

Kind regards,

Alison

Went to good old google and got this.

Might be the one you are looking for.
Click on history 1848 -1904 for two nice pics of the church.

According to the Virtuall Mitchell there was a St. Marks in Cheapside St. Anderston.
http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/cgi-bin/vm/main.plx Enter Cheapside St in search box.

Have you looked at the marriage entry, which would give you the area, or is it too modern?

Hi Annette
Your suggestion seems the most likely - the marriage entry in 1890 (which I have a copy of) is of no help: the actual marriage took place in Edinburgh, (James McNicol was born in Anderston) and it was the Scotsman entry that was of interest:
The Scotsman - Friday, 18th April 1890, page 8
At Robinson's Hotel, Lothian Road, Edinburgh on the 16th inst. by the Rev. George Stevens, Free St Bernard's , assisted by the Rev. J D McCulloch, Hope Street - Free Church Glasgow, uncle of the bride, and the Rev. Robert Stewart, St Mark's Parish Church Glasgow, James McNicol, Glasgow to Annabella, only daughter of John Dick, 3 Reid Terrace, Edinburgh.
I was just interested in the mention of Rev. Robert Stewart of St Marks Parish Church as I thought it may help me get a bit of a grip on this couple who are "missing" in the 1891 - the fact they are "missing" is not just down to my incompetence as I had suspected. Eileen Thomson at GROS very kindly had a look and confirmed that they are just NOT there in the index. Trying to narrow down the possible areas before a manual search is attempted! (although, quite reasonably, Eileen suggested they might have been out of the country, I have my doubts......)

Thanks for your help everyone
Best wishes

Hello Lesley and Annette M,

My g-g-grandparents, Andrew Alexander and Christina Glass, were married in November 1859 in the District of Anderston, Glasgow. And some thirty years before your 1890 marriage Lesley, their minister was Robert Stewart of St. Marks.

The "When, where, and how Married" field says "On the Seventh day of November 1859 at 306½ St Vincent Street Glasgow, Marriage (after Banns) was solemnized between us in accordance with the Forms of the Established Church of Scotland."

As Andrew & Christina had been living at 15 Union Place, Anderston at the time of their marriage, I had thought the St. Vincent Street address was maybe the church, or perhaps the manse. Annette's find on the Virtual Mitchell has put paid to that!

Andrew & Christina named their 9th and last child Robert Stewart Alexander, possibly after the minister who married them. Although Andrew's mother was named Fanny Stewart, so it's also possible that the child was named for a relative, and the name just a coincidence. Or perhaps the minister was the relative. Something for me to follow up some day.

I hope this info was of some interest,

Jane
